What is an agile delivery director?

An Agile Delivery Director is a senior leader responsible for overseeing the delivery of products or projects using Agile methodologies. They ensure teams follow Agile principles, remove obstacles, and foster continuous improvement to deliver high-quality results efficiently. This role typically involves managing multiple teams, aligning delivery with business goals, and communicating progress to stakeholders. Agile Delivery Directors also coach teams and leaders on best practices and help shape the organization's Agile strategy.

How does an agile delivery director typically interact with cross-functional teams to ensure project success?

An Agile Delivery Director plays a pivotal role in facilitating communication and collaboration among cross-functional teams, such as product owners, scrum masters, developers, and business stakeholders. They often coordinate regular meetings, remove impediments, and align team efforts with organizational goals to drive project delivery. By fostering an environment of transparency and continuous improvement, the Agile Delivery Director ensures that teams adhere to Agile principles and deliver high-quality products on time. Successful directors frequently mentor team members and encourage knowledge sharing to support both current projects and long-term professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an agile delivery director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agile Delivery Director, you typically need expertise in agile methodologies, project management, and stakeholder engagement, often supported by a bachelor's degree and agile certifications like SAFe or Scrum Master. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, and project tracking systems is vital for managing workflows and team collaboration. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills help you inspire teams and align diverse stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects efficiently, fostering an agile culture, and ensuring business objectives are met.

  • Enables business value scoring and prioritization, coordinates dependencies across Engineering, Product, UX, Data, and Operations, sets direction on interrupt work capacity, and leads OKR alignment and adoption
  • Tracks key metrics and leverages AI-enabled dashboards to surface risks, improve delivery predictability, and sustain portfolio health, establishing governance to monitor systemic gaps and corrective actions; manages cross-team impediments and escalates issues that cannot be resolved at the value stream level
  • Defines and owns the specialty incident management response, customer follow-up, contractual commitments, and audit records
  • Tracks and communicates strategic initiatives across the specialty portfolio, including capability development, modernization, pricing model changes, and automation. Leads executive reporting on key metrics, including financial tracking, forecasting, progress against goals, and risk detail through executive readouts and updates.
  • Owns and strengthens relationships with cross-functional stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Sales, Operations, Commercial, Support, Legal, and Strategy to ensure the portfolio is operationally sound, commercially aligned, and effectively supported across the business.

Skills You'll Need

  • Degree or equivalent experience, with 12+ years of professional experience, including 4+ years in a managerial role and 8+ years leading product managers or a product portfolio
  • Experience serving as or working closely with a Release Train Engineer in a SAFe environment; SAFe RTE, SAFe Agilist, or equivalent certification preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to stack rank competing priorities across a complex portfolio, drive cross-functional alignment, and lead teams through platform modernization or large-scale technology transformation
  • Strong facilitation, coaching, and systems thinking skills; comfortable making decisions in times of ambiguity with input from engineering, product, operations, and commercial stakeholders
  • Product, project, and portfolio management
  • Financial acumen, including budget planning and complex financial analysis
  • Strategy and change management

Preferred Skills

  • Effective communication skills across all levels, from executives to individual team members
