What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ag engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agricultural Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, agricultural science, and a bachelor's degree in agricultural or biological engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and industry standards like ASABE certification is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with farmers and multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable agricultural engineers to design sustainable solutions, improve productivity, and address complex challenges in modern agriculture.

What projects does an ag engineer work on, and how do they collaborate with other professionals?

Ag Engineers often work on projects related to improving agricultural machinery, designing irrigation systems, or developing sustainable farming solutions. These projects usually require close collaboration with agronomists, farmers, environmental scientists, and sometimes government agencies to ensure designs meet both practical and regulatory needs. Teamwork is essential, as Ag Engineers must integrate feedback from field tests and coordinate with manufacturing or construction teams. This collaborative environment helps deliver effective solutions that address real-world agricultural challenges.

What is the difference between Ag Engineer vs Agronomist?

Job Description:

The Retrofit Solutions Lead Engineer is the driving force behind our Avionics Systems Upgrades. In this highly visible role, you will own the end-to-end lifecycle of Service Bulletins (SB) and Kit projects. From crafting the initial Technical Offer (TO) and steering SB production, all the way to physical embodiment on the aircraft, you will serve as the vital link between engineering design, operational teams, and our airline customers.

If you have a pioneering spirit, a synthetic mindset, and a passion for leading complex aviation projects globally, we want you on our team.

Meet the team:

Our Engineers have the privilege of working on complex, highly engineered machines and are involved at all stages of the aircraft life cycle, from product development to manufacturing and direct support to our airline customers. If you're interested in designing, creating, and testing the present and future of Airbus products across the globe, join our mission to connect the world.

Your working environment:

The Engineering Center in Mobile, Alabama houses hundreds of Airbus engineers who assist in the design and development of Airbus commercial aircraft cabins, including aftermarket upgrades, reconfigurations and services of all product types across the globe.

Your challenges:

  • System Subject Matter Expert: Immerse yourself in avionics upgrade topics to become the go-to technical authority, capable of anticipating customer needs and identifying innovative retrofit solutions.

  • Technical Authority: Actively develop your knowledge of SB Technical Approvals to successfully obtain and execute Design Organization Approval (DOS) delegations.

  • End-to-End Execution: Lead the complete SB project lifecycle. Manage planning, secure internal/industrial capacity, and commit to contractual delivery dates that feed our commercial and accounting units.

  • Technical Assessment: Perform rigorous technical assessments prior to SB launch (including SEKOM for standard SBs) and execute Technical Offers (TO), Rough Order of Magnitudes (ROMs), and cost assessments.

  • Matrix Leadership: While this is an individual contributor role, you will act as a pivotal leader, coordinating operational teams to guarantee project quality and on-time delivery.

How we care for you:

  • Financial Rewards: Competitive base salary, incentive compensation which may include profit sharing schemes, retirement savings plan and the ability to participate in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan ("ESOP")

  • Work/Life Balance: Paid time off including personal time, holidays and a generous paid parental leave program.

  • Individual Development: Upskilling and development opportunities through our global Leadership University, including unlimited access to 10,000+ e-learning courses focusing on ways to develop your employability, certifications, career path as well as the opportunity to participate in accelerated development programmes and both national and international mobility.

At Airbus, we support you to work, connect and collaborate more easily and accessibly.

  • 10+ years of experience leading large, diverse engineering projects in the aviation industry (spanning project management, design, and production).
