What is an afternoon controller family office?

An Afternoon Controller in a Family Office is responsible for overseeing financial activities and reporting during the afternoon hours, often to accommodate global time zones or flexible work arrangements. Their duties typically include managing accounting operations, preparing financial statements, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Family Offices support the wealth management needs of high-net-worth families, so controllers also coordinate with investment advisors, tax professionals, and other staff. The 'afternoon' aspect usually refers to a work shift or time coverage rather than a specific job function. This role requires strong accounting skills, attention to detail, and experience in private wealth management environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an afternoon controller in a family office?

To thrive as an Afternoon Controller in a Family Office, you need strong financial acumen, accounting expertise, and experience with financial reporting, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and CPA or similar certification. Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Excel, and family office management systems is often required. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong discretion in handling confidential information are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and the trusted stewardship of family assets in a dynamic private environment.

How does an afternoon controller in a family office typically interact with other departments or professionals within the organization?

As an Afternoon Controller in a Family Office, you will regularly collaborate with investment managers, tax advisors, legal counsel, and administrative staff to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and support for family members' needs. This role often requires effective communication and coordination to reconcile accounts, review transactions, and provide timely financial updates. Working in a smaller, close-knit team environment is common, allowing for greater visibility and involvement in a variety of financial and operational decisions. Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders is key to supporting the office's financial goals and maintaining trust.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while partnering effectively with executives, advisors, and external service providers.
  • Prior leadership experience managing or mentoring accounting professionals.
  • Experience with investment accounting or family office accounting is highly preferred.
