What is an afternoon AI programmer?

Afternoon AI Programmers are software developers who specialize in creating, training, and maintaining artificial intelligence (AI) systems, typically working during afternoon shifts or hours. Their responsibilities include designing algorithms, writing code for AI applications, and collaborating with data scientists to implement machine learning models. These programmers may focus on tasks such as natural language processing, computer vision, or data analysis, depending on the company's needs. Afternoon AI Programmers are often employed in industries like tech, finance, healthcare, and more, where AI solutions are in demand. This role requires strong programming skills, familiarity with AI frameworks, and an understanding of data structures and algorithms.

How do afternoon AI programmers typically collaborate with other team members during their shift?

Afternoon AI Programmers often work closely with data scientists, product managers, and fellow developers to ensure that AI models and algorithms are integrated smoothly into applications. Collaboration usually happens through daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation, even if some team members are on different shifts. Effective communication and clear handovers are essential to maintain project continuity and resolve issues quickly. This collaborative environment allows programmers to learn from peers and contribute to cross-functional projects, enhancing both individual and team performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an afternoon AI programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Afternoon AI Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Python or Java, a solid understanding of machine learning concepts, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize features for the AI runtime and SaaS platform.

  • Contribute to open-source projects and engage with the developer community.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the adoption and scaling of agentic AI in production.

Job description

RocketRideis an SF-basedAI startup pushing the boundaries ofopen sourceagentic workflows — helping developers build smarter systems that workfor them. Our platform connects automation, AI, andopencollaboration into something fast, flexible, and deeply useful.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and optimize features for our AI runtime and compute‑optimized SaaS platform, from prototype experiments to hardened production services.
  • Deliver rapidly with high quality, leaning on the latest agentic AI code‑generation tools to move 10x faster without sacrificing reliability.
  • Recruit, lead, and mentor a small, high‑performing development team that ships often, measures impact and iterates quickly.
  • Contribute meaningfully to our open‑source projects and help grow our developer community through Discord, live events, demos, and technical content.
  • Stay on the cutting edge of generative AI (LLMs, agents, tools, retrieval, evaluation) and turn new capabilities into concrete product features and customer use cases.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, finance, DevRel, and founders to ensure our systems support how real developers adopt and scale agentic AI in production.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience developing distributed backend systems and services at scale.
  • Deep familiarity with agent frameworks, LLMs, AI tooling, vector/graph databases, and ETL pipelines in support of AI applications and business workflows.
  • Demonstrated leverage of agentic AI tooling to achieve step‑change productivity in development and operations.
  • Strong, demonstrable coding skills in Python and C++, with clean abstractions and a bias toward maintainable, testable systems.
  • Experience building and leading collaborative, high-energy teams that deliver often and learn fast.
  • Prior experience contributing to open‑source projects and engaging with developer communities.
  • A love of staying technical – solving problems with code and data, not slide decks.
  • You’re able to work from our San Francisco office regularly at least 3 days/week, as part of our hybrid team.
Bonus Points
  • Clear communicator who can move comfortably between deep technical detail and executive‑level or customer‑facing conversations in the same afternoon.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges and approaches for working with unstructured data (text, code, logs, documents, etc.).
  • Hands‑on with Langflow, n8n, or other low‑code AI orchestration tools.
  • Practical knowledge of operating systems and common networking protocols.
Why This Role Matters

At our size and pace, every improvement you make moves the needle – technically and financially. You'll have the freedom to experiment, the resources to execute, and the chance to build solutions that set the standard for developer productivity and rapid AI pipeline development in the emerging world of agentic AI. If you want to drive the design and development of high-value features, work directly with founders and users, and see your ideas deploy quickly to production; this is your role.
