Job description

Job Title: Athletic Director and P.E. Teacher

Location: Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Denver (ACAND)-Brighton, CO

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Dean of Students

Typical Schedule: Extended Year Calendar, typically M-F, School days and some summer requirements, PD days, after-school athletic events

Position Summary: The Athletic Director coordinates the daily operations of the athletic program. This includes supporting coaches and student-athletes, assisting with budgets and events, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, and promoting the school's mission through athletics. The position requires being present at athletic events-especially in the evenings-to support the smooth execution of practices and competitions and to foster strong relationships within the school community.

The role also involves teaching several upper school PE classes.

This individual must align with the mission of classical education and be committed to cultivating virtue, discipline, and sportsmanship in student-athletes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee middle and high school athletics, ensuring a high-quality program aligned with school values.
  • Hire and support coaches and student-athletes in their day-to-day needs.
  • Manage the middle and high school athletics budget, track expenses, and planning processes.
  • Coordinate scheduling and use of athletic facilities; assist with maintenance requests when needed.
  • Plan and carry out athletic events, including game-day setup, scheduling, and operations.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable school policies, league regulations, and relevant guidelines (e.g., Title IX).
  • Maintain accurate records for eligibility, participation, inventory, and injuries.
  • Serve as a consistent point of contact for middle and high school athletics-communicating with coaches, parents, students, and staff.
  • Assist with planning and executing fundraising initiatives for athletics.
  • Help coordinate travel for middle school teams when needed.
  • Help create and distribute materials promoting events to students, families, and the community.
  • Help report injuries or incidents following school protocols, including documentation and communication.
  • Coach Support: Help with recruiting, onboarding, and supporting coaches; assist with scheduling and team logistics.
  • Student-Athlete Support: Help monitor student-athlete eligibility, behavior, and well-being.
  • Scheduling: Help schedule games, practices, and facility use.
  • Staff Supervision: May help oversee support staff related to school athletics.
  • Game Day Presence: Serve as a school representative at home games and postseason away events; consistent evening availability is expected.
  • Media and Communications: Assist with internal and external communications related to athletics.
  • Professional Development: Participate in training, clinics, and professional learning opportunities as needed.
  • Regular attendance at home competitions.
  • Travel to postseason away games and athletic-related meetings as needed.
  • Prepare unit and weekly/daily lesson plans following Hillsdale K-12 curriculum guidelines for each year
  • Assign, collect, grade and return graded work in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with the other full-time PE teacher to plan lessons and share space as needed

    Position Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree required; sports management, or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in athletics leadership, coaching, or event coordination, preferably within a school setting.
    • Experience teaching Physical Education at the middle or high school level.
    • Commitment to the mission of classical education, with an emphasis on character development, virtue, and discipline through athletics.
    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
    • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before start date).

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to traverse the classroom and the school
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer
  • Must be able to supervise outdoor duties
