Job description

Afterschool Program Counselor / Academic Support Staff

Position Overview
SMS7 Childcare LLC is seeking a dependable, energetic, and caring Afterschool Program Counselor to join our team for the upcoming school year.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children and understands that a quality afterschool program should provide a balance of academic support, supervision, enrichment, and fun.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable helping students with homework and school assignments while also creating a positive, structured, and engaging environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise children during all afterschool activities and transitions.
  • Assist students with homework, reading, writing, math, and other academic assignments.
  • Provide additional academic support to children who may need help understanding their schoolwork.
  • Encourage positive study habits, organization, and completion of homework.
  • Lead and participate in recreational, educational, arts & crafts, and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, welcoming, and respectful environment.
  • Actively engage with children rather than simply observing activities.
  • Help manage classroom behavior using positive and age-appropriate techniques.
  • Monitor children closely and maintain proper supervision at all times.
  • Assist with attendance, sign-in/sign-out procedures, and daily program routines.
  • Help maintain clean and organized classrooms and activity areas.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, children, and families.
  • Follow all SMS7 Childcare LLC policies, safety procedures, and program expectations.
  • Report injuries, incidents, behavioral concerns, or other important matters to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development as required.
  • Perform other childcare and program-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must:
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent at minimum.
  • Have previous experience working with children in a childcare, afterschool, tutoring, camp, school, youth program, or similar setting.
  • Have experience assisting children with homework and academics.
  • Be comfortable supporting elementary and/or middle-school students with their schoolwork.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be patient, responsible, dependable, and professional.
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Be able to maintain appropriate boundaries and professional behavior when working with children.
  • Be willing to complete all required background checks, clearances, training, and employment documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
  • College coursework or a degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as an afterschool counselor, teacher's assistant, tutor, childcare worker, camp counselor, paraprofessional, or youth development professional.
  • Experience providing academic support to children ages 5–13.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience planning educational or enrichment activities.
What We're Looking For
Our ideal candidate is someone who is reliable, patient, attentive, energetic, and genuinely enjoys helping children succeed.
This position requires someone who can provide strong supervision while also sitting with a child and helping them work through a difficult homework assignment. Candidates should be comfortable managing a group of children while maintaining a positive and encouraging atmosphere.
Dependability and consistent attendance are extremely important for this position.
