They assist with research, case preparation, client interviews, and sometimes help with outreach or educational initiatives. The internship provides hands-on exposure to legal processes and advocacy work, helping interns build important skills for future careers. Advocate Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced advocates or attorneys, learning about the profession while contributing to meaningful projects.

What do advocate interns do?

As an Advocate Intern, you can expect to assist with case research, draft legal documents, attend client meetings, and observe court proceedings. You may also support senior advocates by organizing case files, preparing briefs, and conducting legal research on relevant statutes or precedents. Additionally, you’ll often collaborate with paralegals, legal assistants, and attorneys, gaining firsthand experience in client advocacy and legal procedure. This varied workflow offers valuable exposure to both the legal and practical aspects of advocacy.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an advocate intern?

To thrive as an Advocate Intern, you need a foundational understanding of legal principles, research skills, and often enrollment in or completion of relevant coursework in law or social sciences. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management systems, and standard office software is commonly expected. Strong communication, empathy, and organizational skills help you connect with clients and support legal professionals effectively. These skills are vital for efficiently assisting with casework, advocating for clients, and learning within a legal or advocacy-focused environment.
