Athletic Coaching Positions (Head Coach & Assistant Coach)
Charles County Public Schools
Employment Type: Temporary, 12-Month • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt • Compensation: Stipend
Position Overview
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is seeking qualified Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches to support education-based athletics. Coaches will promote skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and character, while ensuring the safety and supervision of student-athletes.
  • Head Coaches lead and manage all levels of the program (varsity, junior varsity, and freshman).
  • Assistant Coaches support the head coach with instruction, supervision, and program operations.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following:
  • Certified teachers or professional educators employed by a local Board of Education; OR
  • Individuals certified by MSDE under COMAR 13A.12.01; OR
  • Credentialed coaches who:
    • Are eligible for a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01
    • Hold MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification
    • Have two years of successful emergency coaching experience
    • Have one year of successful emergency coaching experience at the hiring school in the position applied for

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Head Coach
  • Submit all required coaching certifications to the athletic director.
  • Complete CCPS/MPSSAA forms (eligibility rosters, reports, etc.).
  • Ensure only cleared athletes participate in tryouts and receive equipment.
  • Conduct mandatory pre-season meetings for athletes and families.
  • Manage the entire program: varsity, JV, and freshman.
  • Supervise, assign, and evaluate assistant and sub-varsity coaches.
  • Review Superintendent Rule 1111 with coaching staff.
  • Oversee equipment issuance, inventory, repairs, and collection of lost-item fees.
  • Maintain lists of athletic awards, honors, and team records.
  • Submit equipment needs and annual budget requests.
  • Attend required clinics, meetings, and training.

Assistant Coach
  • Support and report directly to the head coach.
  • Serve as a positive role model promoting sportsmanship and character.
  • Assist with pre-season meetings and program communication.
  • Arrive early for practices; secure facilities before and after activities.
  • Teach fundamentals and supervise athletes at all times.
  • Assist with scouting and attending varsity contests as required.
  • Help manage equipment distribution, collection, and inventory.
  • Assist with award lists, recognition, and annual budget preparation.
  • Maintain cleanliness of coaching and team spaces.

Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
