What is an advanced scrum master?

Advanced Scrum Masters are experienced professionals who facilitate Agile teams using the Scrum framework, focusing on optimizing team performance, resolving complex impediments, and driving continuous improvement. Unlike entry-level Scrum Masters, they often mentor other Scrum Masters, work with multiple teams, and help organizations adopt Agile practices at scale. They possess deep knowledge of Agile principles and often hold advanced certifications, such as the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM). Their goal is to foster high-performing teams and ensure effective collaboration across the organization.

How does an advanced scrum master typically support and coach multiple Scrum teams within an organization?

An Advanced Scrum Master often works with several teams simultaneously, facilitating Scrum events, removing impediments, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. They coach teams and stakeholders on Agile best practices, help navigate cross-team dependencies, and work closely with Product Owners to ensure alignment on goals. This role also involves mentoring less experienced Scrum Masters and driving organizational change by promoting Agile values at all levels. Effective communication and strong conflict resolution skills are essential, as Advanced Scrum Masters frequently collaborate with leadership, developers, and business stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced scrum master, and why are they important?

To excel as an Advanced Scrum Master, you need a deep understanding of Agile methodologies, strong facilitation skills, and experience managing multiple Scrum teams, often supported by advanced certifications such as Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) or PMI-ACP. Proficiency with Agile project management tools like Jira, Confluence, and reporting dashboards is essential for tracking progress and removing impediments. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and servant leadership abilities help foster high-performing, collaborative teams. These competencies are critical for driving continuous improvement, ensuring project success, and supporting organizational Agile transformation.

Job description

Job Title: Agile Scrum Master

DURATION: 12-18 months (Mid Term)

LOCATION: Grand Rapids, MI (Onsite 3 days a week)

REQUIRED SKILLS: Agile Transformation, Agile Methodologies

Notes:

  • Prioritize candidates with 3+ years of Scrum Master or Agile delivery experience, strong SAFe Agile knowledge, and hands-on experience managing Scrum boards and refining acceptance criteria. Screen for analytical thinking, cross-team collaboration, and willingness to support testing and validation.
  • Sprint carryover: Candidates must understand that incomplete work should not be moved to Done, split just to claim completed points, or have effort changed unless it meets the full Definition of Done, including testing/quality requirements. Incorrect handling impacts team velocity and future PI planning.
  • Continuous improvement/root cause: Candidates should demonstrate strong root-cause analysis and provide multiple specific examples of changes they personally implemented to improve team performance not just standard answers like team-building or better communication.

Summary:

We are seeking an Agile Scrum Master to own the Scrum board in partnership with the Product Owner, support SAFe Agile practices, and ensure work items are clearly defined and successfully delivered. This role also partners with upstream and downstream teams to ensure requirements, testing, and delivery expectations are fully aligned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the Scrum board in partnership with the Product Owner.
  • Apply SAFe Agile methodology in day-to-day activities.
  • Create Scrum cards as needed.
  • Ensure Scrum cards are followed through to completion.
  • Represent the team and their work in cross-team ceremonies.
  • Vet work items to ensure robust business acceptance criteria.
  • Vet work items to ensure robust technical acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure adherence to the Definition of Done and help mature the definition over time.
  • Partner with upstream and downstream teams to ensure all required needs are met.
  • Ensure robust test plans are in place.
  • Eliminate unvetted assumptions by working closely with partner teams.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years in a role supporting the responsibilities listed above.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to bring clarity out of confusion.
  • Self-starter who is eager and curious about strengthening the team.
  • Highly analytical with the ability to dig into work items and topics.
  • Willingness to get hands-on with testing and validation.
  • Scrum Master or Advanced Scrum Master certification preferred.
