What is an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE)?

An Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) is a required component of pharmacy school curricula, typically occurring in the final year of a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. During APPEs, students gain hands-on training in real-world pharmacy settings such as hospitals, community pharmacies, ambulatory care clinics, and other healthcare environments. These experiences are designed to help students develop and apply their clinical knowledge, patient care skills, and professional judgment under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. APPEs are essential for preparing pharmacy students for licensure and future practice.
