What is advanced materials engineering research?

Advanced materials engineering research involves the study, development, and testing of new materials with superior properties for use in various industries. This field combines principles from physics, chemistry, and engineering to create materials with enhanced strength, durability, conductivity, or other specialized functions. Researchers in this area work to solve complex problems by designing materials for applications in aerospace, electronics, energy, healthcare, and more. The work often includes both theoretical modeling and experimental testing to understand and improve material performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced materials engineering researcher?

To excel in Advanced Materials Engineering Research, you need a strong background in materials science, physics, and chemistry, often supported by a master's or doctoral degree in a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and simulation software, as well as experience with laboratory safety protocols, is essential. Critical thinking, creativity, and strong communication skills set outstanding researchers apart by enabling innovative problem-solving and effective collaboration. These competencies are vital for driving breakthroughs, ensuring rigorous experimentation, and successfully translating research findings into practical applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in advanced materials engineering research, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Advanced Materials Engineering Research often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving technologies, balancing theoretical research with practical applications, and securing funding for long-term projects. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and industry partners is essential to bridge the gap between innovation and real-world use. Proactively attending conferences, engaging in continuous education, and actively seeking out cross-functional projects can help address these challenges and foster both professional growth and impactful research outcomes.

What is the difference between Advanced Materials Engineering Research vs Materials Development Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Materials Engineering ResearchMaterials Development Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science or EngineeringBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, corporate R&D centersIndustrial labs, manufacturing facilities, product development teams
Industry UsageFocus on fundamental research and new material discoveryFocus on applying materials to develop new products and improve existing ones

Advanced Materials Engineering Research primarily involves fundamental research and discovery of new materials, often in academic or corporate R&D settings. In contrast, Materials Development Engineers focus on applying materials science principles to develop and optimize products for manufacturing. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in their focus and work environment.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams and ensure traceability with the mechanical architecture.

Job description

Schaeffler is a dynamic global technology company and its success has been a result of its entrepreneurial spirit and long history of private ownership. As a partner to all of the major automobile manufacturers, as well as key players in the aerospace and industrial sectors, we offer you many development opportunities.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct magnetic material characterization activities required to develop competitive products.
  • Understand the structure of the mechanical system from the architecture and consider the measures from the risk analysis in the construction.
  • Break down structures into subsystems and components and create a detailed product specification.
  • Check whether existing subsystems and components can be reused.
  • Develop alternative structures and select the one that is most suitable.
  • Ensure double-sided traceability with the mechanical architecture and provide work results under a configuration management (material designation, versioning, storage location, etc.).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to and promote compliance with all relevant safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies throughout the engineering process.
Your Qualifications
  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in Mechanical, Chemical, or Material Science disciplines; candidates with a Master's degree or PhD will be given preference due to advanced expertise.
  • Demonstrate 3 to 5 years of professional experience in materials engineering, with a strong emphasis on magnetic materials and their applications in mechanical systems.
  • Exhibit hands-on laboratory experience, showcasing proficiency in operating and interpreting results from advanced lab equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instruments.
  • Showcase a solid understanding of material characterization techniques relevant to magnetic materials, including microstructural analysis, thermal behavior, and chemical composition assessments.
  • Possess excellent analytical skills with the ability to draw meaningful conclusions from complex data sets and translate these insights into actionable engineering solutions.
  • Effective communication skills to facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, document technical findings clearly, and support stakeholder engagement.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring employment visa sponsorship.

We look forward to your application.
