Staying updated on industry best practices and leveraging simulation tools can further enhance efficiency and innovation in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Advanced Fluid Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advanced Fluid Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, and system design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, hydraulic modeling tools, and industry certifications such as a PE license are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing efficient, reliable fluid systems and ensuring client satisfaction in complex industrial environments.

What are Advanced Fluid Systems?

Advanced Fluid Systems are specialized companies or engineering teams that design, manufacture, and maintain hydraulic, pneumatic, and fluid power systems for various industrial applications. These systems are crucial for controlling the movement and force of liquids and gases in machinery and equipment. Common industries that use advanced fluid systems include manufacturing, energy, aerospace, and automation. Experts in this field focus on system efficiency, reliability, and safety, offering custom solutions and technical support.

What is the difference between Advanced Fluid Systems vs Fluid Mechanics Technician?

AspectAdvanced Fluid SystemsFluid Mechanics Technician
Required CredentialsEngineering degree or technical certification in fluid systemsTechnical diploma or certification in fluid mechanics or related field
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, aerospace, or industrial facilitiesLaboratories, manufacturing sites, or maintenance facilities
Industry UsageDesign, development, and testing of fluid systemsMaintenance, troubleshooting, and testing of fluid systems

Advanced Fluid Systems professionals focus on designing and developing complex fluid systems, often requiring engineering expertise. Fluid Mechanics Technicians typically handle maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of fluid systems. Both roles work in similar environments but differ in their focus and required credentials.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Thermal Fluid Engineer, you'll use advanced fluid dynamics and heat transfer analysis to shape the performance and reliability of large gas turbines. You'll design and analyze internal cooling air systems, secondary air systems, and component clearances using advanced simulation tools, while collaborating with a global engineering team on both new product development and service initiatives. Your work will directly influence turbine efficiency, durability, and continuous improvement across the fleet.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • 60% Thermal-Fluid System Modeling & Simulation
    • Develop and maintain complex models to describe the cooling air supply for hot gas-path components in gas turbines.
    • Simulate transient heating and thermal expansion of the entire turbine to determine optimal assembly gaps and clearances.
    • Utilize a combination of in-house and commercial simulation software to perform fluid dynamics and heat transfer analyses.
    • Analyze and interpret simulation results to validate models against empirical data and derive design-relevant conclusions.
  • 40% Design, Analysis & Improvement
    • Contribute to the conceptual and detailed design of gas turbines, specifically focusing on the secondary air system and clearance design.
    • Evaluate operational data, prototype findings, and fleet feedback to support design improvements and enhance product reliability.
    • Participate in risk assessments, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), for new and modified designs.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project management, component engineering, and manufacturing to ensure design feasibility and integration.
What You Bring
Required
  • BS Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering, or related field. Masters or PhD preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in design, development, or operation of turbomachinery
  • Core Engineering Principles for Fluid Mechanics and/or heat transfer
  • Numerical Simulation & Modeling
  • Data Analysis, Complex Technical Analysis
  • Risk Assessment (FMEA)
  • General Programming Languages
  • Intercultural Collaboration
Preferred
  • Gas Turbines Systems & Components, or similar
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Thermodynamics
  • Finite Element Method (FEM)
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
