What is an advanced electrical engineer?

Advanced Electrical Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and oversee complex electrical systems and components, often for high-tech industries such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, or energy. They apply advanced principles of electrical engineering to innovate and improve products, systems, and processes. These engineers may work on projects involving power distribution, signal processing, electronics, or control systems. Their responsibilities often include research, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of electrical solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced electrical engineer?

To thrive as an Advanced Electrical Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical theory, circuit design, and problem-solving, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering and relevant work experience. Familiarity with design software such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, and simulation tools, as well as certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These skills ensure precision in complex system development, adherence to safety standards, and successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges an advanced electrical engineer might face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Advanced Electrical Engineers often collaborate with teams from mechanical, software, and systems engineering disciplines. A common challenge is ensuring seamless integration of electrical components with other systems while adhering to project timelines and standards. Effective communication and a solid understanding of adjacent engineering fields are essential for troubleshooting issues and achieving project goals. Working through conflicting requirements and adapting to rapidly changing technology are also typical aspects of the role, making flexibility and problem-solving skills particularly valuable.

What is the difference between Advanced Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; PE license optional
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing in R&D labs or project sitesDesign, analysis, and maintenance in manufacturing or construction settings
Industry UsageUsed in complex projects requiring advanced technical skillsCommon in general electrical design and maintenance roles

Advanced Electrical Engineers typically hold higher qualifications and work on complex projects requiring specialized skills, whereas Electrical Engineers perform foundational design and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry, but the advanced role involves more complex problem-solving and technical expertise.

Job description

Overview

Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $4.5B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.

Vertex in Indianapolis, IN is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership in power conditioning, drive electronics, and advanced networked control architectures across ground industrial and vehicleclass systems. This growth position will define and standardize approaches for power conversion, battery charging, nonlinear load handling, digital I/O/COTS SBC integration, and CANbased control architectures (CAN 2.0/CAN FD) at the physical, logical, and application layers.

The Principal Electrical Engineer will lead electrical architecture for multiboard and multimodule systems, partition functions across CCAs and subsystems, and drive standards and best practices in power electronics, drive circuitry, digital I/O, and communication interfaces. The role includes architecting power systems, designing battery charger and energy storage systems, handling nonlinear loads and actuation drives, defining CANbased communication schemes, and guiding integration of SBCs and digital I/O/relay circuits. This engineer will serve as a principal technical authority, mentoring other engineers and influencing proposals and IRAD investments.

Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical architecture and design for power conditioning, drive electronics, and CANbased control subsystems across multiple programs.
  • Define systemlevel power architectures, including AC/DC and DC/DC conversion, distribution, protection, and energy storage strategies.
  • Architect and design battery charger systems and energy storage interfaces, including charging algorithms, protection, and diagnostics.
  • Define and validate solutions for nonlinear loads (motor drives, pulsed loads, Class Dstyle power stages) to maintain power quality and system stability.
  • Specify and oversee the design of regulated and unregulated DC/DC buck controllers, isolated topologies, and Hbridge/dual Hbridge drive stages.
  • Define CANbased communication architectures, including physicallayer design, bus topologies, and applicationlayer messaging for control and diagnostics.
  • Guide the integration of digital I/O, relay control, and COTS SBCs into power and control subsystems.
  • Perform and review advanced simulations (SPICE/SIMetrix, MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS SiWave, Keysight ADS or equivalent) for SI/PI, transient behavior, and power system performance; ensure correlation with test results.
  • Lead and host design reviews, set analysis expectations, and approve critical component and topology decisions.
  • Support and guide EMC/EMI and environmental qualification campaigns for power, drive, and communication subsystems.
  • Mentor senior, midlevel, and junior engineers in power electronics, drive systems, CAN architectures, and advanced simulation methods.
  • Contribute to and lead proposals, cost/schedule estimates, and IRAD planning in power, drives, and networked control.
