Job description

Head of Adult Services
Bainbridge Library
Position Summary: In addition to fulfilling responsibilities in the absence of the Library Manager, oversees and provides direct reference service, and oversees all facets of adult services including staff training, weeding, and adult programming.
Essential Job Functions: This list is illustrative, but not exhaustive for this position.
  • Coordinates all activities of the adult services department including the development of programming.
  • Interviews, selects, trains, schedules and evaluates adult services staff. Sets annual departmental objectives in consultation with the library manager.
  • Manages the materials collection by weeding on a regular basis and working with Collection Development librarians to ensure collection is up-to-date and meets community needs.
  • Provides direct customer service for patrons of all ages including reference, readers' advisory, technology assistance and programming. Promotes library materials and services.
  • Assists the manager in administration, management and planning, and oversees the operation of the library in the manager's absence.
  • Keeps up with new technologies, and innovations in the library field.
  • Collaborates effectively with GCPL committees in support of system-wide strategic initiatives. Attends the Heads of Adult Services monthly meetings.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities. Encourages and manages the professional development of staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Consistently applies library policies and procedures for library staff and patrons.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with community organizations to promote library services and programs.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Ability to monitor budgets and supplies.
  • Experience in library services with emphasis on reference, reader's advisory and adult services.
  • Must possess a positive customer service attitude, professional demeanor, and the ability to be friendly, courteous and tactful with the public.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and in a friendly and positive manner with staff and library users from diverse backgrounds and listen to and address the concerns of others.
  • Working knowledge of computers, personal devices, software, technology, and experience with digital resources.
  • Ability to apply new technologies to enhance and promote the services of the department and the library.
  • Keeps up to date with innovations in the library field and how they will impact library services.
  • Willingness and adaptability to work in a changing work environment.
  • Ability to consistently follow procedures and strong attention to detail.
  • All other qualifications required for Adult Services Assistants.
  • Safely observes all PERRP procedures.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
  • ALA Accredited MLS/MLIS degree
  • Has reliable transportation in order to meet work obligations
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to operate objects, tools, or controls - including computers, phones, and office equipment.
  • Competence in completing tasks that involve reading or visual inspection, with or without visual aids.
  • This position requires alternate standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, and have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds or more on occasion with or without assistance.

Pay Range: $23 - $26 per hour
