Gym Operations & Facilities Assistant

Division: Support Services Department: Center for Student Engagement

Supervisor/Reports To: Tyler Freas Start Date:8/25/2025

The Gym Operations & Facility Assistant plays a key role in supporting the daily functions of the campus fitness center. This position provides hands-on experience in gym operations, facility management, and customer service, making it ideal for students interested in sports management, health sciences, or leadership roles. In addition to maintaining a clean and safe environment, assistants help with member engagement, operational oversight, and equipment maintenance, gaining real-world experience in a professional fitness setting.

Responsibilities and Career Competencies:

  1. Serve as thefirst point of contactfor all gym visitors by greeting them professionally and providing helpful information.
  2. Verify user credentials to ensure all patrons are authorized, learning to enforce policy with professionalism and tact.
  3. Support gym operationsby helping manage traffic flow, facility usage, and user behavior to ensure a safe and positive environment.
  4. Conduct regularequipment inspectionsand assist in basic maintenance, helping to identify issues before they become hazards.
  5. Clean and sanitize high-touch areas and gym equipment during shifts to ensure hygiene and user safety.
  6. Organize and return equipment to designated storage areas, helping to maintain gym functionality and appearance.
  7. Monitor usage of equipment and gym spaces to promote safe and appropriate use, gaining experience in risk management and user education.
  8. Assist with restocking supplies (e.g., soap, paper towels, sanitizer), and ensure locker rooms and restrooms remain clean and user ready.
  9. Report safety concerns, equipment malfunctions, or user violations to the gym supervisor promptly and accurately.
  10. Collaborate with staff to supportspecial programs or events, such as wellness days or group classes.
  11. Provide friendly and knowledgeable assistance to patrons with questions or concerns, developingcustomer service and communication skills.
  12. Maintain a responsible, proactive presence while on duty and act as a representative of campus wellness values.
  13. Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to a collaborative and efficient gym team.

Preferred Skills: Word, Excel, attention to detail, written & verbal communication, customer focus, willingness to learn, follow, and help enforce gym policies and safety protocols, interest in fitness, sports, recreation, or facility operations is a plus.

Work Schedule: Flexible around student class schedule; priority hours during open facility times and special events: Sunday-Saturday, Evening Preferred.

Work Conditions: Exposure to heat, cold, noise, vibrations, humidity, light intensity.

Physical Demands: Keyboarding, reaching/handling, stooping/kneeling, crouching/crawling, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.

Number of Positions: 18-20

Pay Rate: $8.75/hour
