Additional Adult Assistant information

What is an additional adult assistant?

Additional Adult Assistants are support staff in schools who work alongside teachers to help provide a better learning environment for students. They often assist with classroom management, support students with special educational needs, and help facilitate activities. Their work enables teachers to focus more on instruction while ensuring that all students receive the attention and support they need. Additional Adult Assistants may also help with administrative tasks, supervise students during non-classroom times, and work one-on-one or in small groups with children.

How does an additional adult assistant typically collaborate with teachers and support staff in the classroom?

As an Additional Adult Assistant, you will work closely with classroom teachers and other support staff to ensure that all students, especially those with additional needs, receive the attention and resources they require. This often involves assisting with lesson preparation, supporting small groups or individual students, and reinforcing instructions provided by the teacher. Frequent communication and coordination are key, as you may be asked to adapt your approach based on the teacher’s plan or students’ specific needs. Building positive relationships with both staff and students is essential to fostering an inclusive and productive learning environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an additional adult assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Additional Adult Assistant, you typically need experience working with children or young people, basic literacy and numeracy skills, and sometimes relevant qualifications such as a Level 2 Teaching Assistant certificate. Familiarity with classroom technology, learning support tools, and safeguarding procedures is often required. Patience, strong communication, and the ability to build rapport with students and staff are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure effective support for students’ learning, contribute to a positive classroom environment, and help meet diverse educational needs.

Constructivism is a theory of learning which holds that each of us has a unique schema of the world based on our lived experience and that by interacting with our environment we make connections to what we already know and construct new meaning. It is therefore essential that we know our students well to be able to meet them where they are and grow from there.

We do this through small class size, looping, longer periods of instruction, and a focus on social-emotional development and community K-12. Learning is seen as an active process. Diversity is core to our model because it is through ensuring a richly diverse environment - of both people and programming - that we create the setting for learning to occur.

The diversity of our community provides students the opportunities to interact and benefit from students and staff from disparate backgrounds often resulting in a variety of perspectives leading to diversity of thought and increasing critical and creative thinking. The diversity in the program - both the interdisciplinary project-based learning and the rich array of enrichment and elective offerings - music, art, movement, cooking, gardening, improvisation, and more K-12 - tap into our students' multiple intelligences and facilitate them making connections across the curriculum. This is the power of our model.

This Diverse by Design video highlights the power of integration and how Larchmont is part of a national movement to realize the vision and promise of Brown v. Board of Education. It was made possible through a generous benefactor and professional filmmaker in our community.
