What is ad operations?

Ad Operations, often abbreviated as Ad Ops, refers to the team and processes responsible for managing, delivering, and optimizing digital advertising campaigns. This includes setting up ad campaigns, trafficking creatives, monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring ads run smoothly across digital platforms. Ad Operations professionals work closely with sales, marketing, and technical teams to maximize ad revenue and campaign effectiveness. Their expertise ensures that ads reach the right audience while meeting both client and publisher goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ad operations professional, and why are they important?

To excel in Ad Operations, you need analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in digital marketing or advertising, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with ad servers (like Google Ad Manager), programmatic platforms, and analytics tools is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you manage campaigns and collaborate with cross-functional teams effectively. These abilities are essential to ensure accurate campaign execution, optimize performance, and deliver results for clients and stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced in ad operations, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Ad Operations often encounter challenges such as tight campaign deadlines, frequent changes in client requirements, and the need to troubleshoot issues across multiple ad platforms. Effective communication with sales, creative, and technical teams is key to managing these challenges, as is staying organized and detail-oriented. Proactively learning about new ad technologies and maintaining up-to-date documentation can also help streamline workflows and minimize errors.

The Ad Operations Specialist works on a portfolio of clients to build and manage digital client campaigns and website tagging within the Media Intelligence & Operations department. The Ad Operations Specialist is proactive, organized, and exhibits strong communication and interpersonal skills. This role is responsible for digital campaign setup, trafficking, tracking implementation, and pacing monitoring across assigned accounts, and serves as a key point of contact between internal teams and media vendors on campaign delivery matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Develop and manage digital campaigns in the digital ad serving and campaign management platform, implementing tracking that aligns with client goals; monitor campaign pacing and delivery trends using the campaign pacing platform and client dashboard platform, independently diagnosing the root cause of underperformance and determining the appropriate corrective action (reallocation, flighting adjustment, vendor substitution) before presenting recommendations to client teams.
  • Evaluate each client's measurement needs and campaign objectives to determine the most effective digital campaign setup and tracking architecture, adapting standard frameworks within the digital ad serving and campaign management platform, tag management platform, and web analytics platform where client-specific requirements warrant deviation.
  • Build and implement UTMs and tracking URLs in alignment with agency naming conventions and client measurement strategies; ensure accurate and consistent tracking across all digital campaign touchpoints.
  • Traffic digital creative assets to vendors, ensuring all assets meet vendor specifications; communicate proactively with vendors and internal teams at each step of the digital trafficking process to confirm delivery requirements and timelines are met.
  • Monitor digital campaign delivery and performance reporting; analyze reporting anomalies and formulate a recommended resolution, looping in the Ad Operations Supervisor on matters with budget, contractual, or client-relationship impact rather than as a default step.
  • Lead implementation of website tags and pixels in the tag management platform, selecting the appropriate configuration based on client measurement goals and troubleshooting discrepancies independently; support the team in maintaining accurate trafficking logs and campaign documentation.
  • Maintain accurate time records in the finance/media platform; adhere to agency processes, workflow standards, and privacy protocols including PII compliance; attend internal training and industry conferences as directed.
