What is an actuarial graduate intern?

Actuarial Graduate Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in an actuarial department, typically within insurance, finance, or consulting firms. Their main role is to support actuaries by analyzing data, developing models, and assisting in the assessment of financial risks. Interns gain practical experience in applying mathematical and statistical techniques to real-world problems, often as part of a pathway toward a full-time actuarial career. This experience helps them understand the industry, develop technical skills, and prepare for professional actuarial exams.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an actuarial graduate intern?

To thrive as an Actuarial Graduate Intern, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, typically supported by a relevant degree such as actuarial science, mathematics, or statistics. Familiarity with actuarial modeling software, Excel, and programming languages like R or Python, as well as progress toward actuarial exams, is often expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and teamwork skills help you interpret data and collaborate with colleagues effectively. These competencies are critical for delivering accurate risk assessments, supporting business decisions, and succeeding in a technical, team-oriented environment.

What types of projects can an actuarial graduate intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Actuarial Graduate Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects such as analyzing insurance claims data, assisting with pricing new insurance products, and supporting the preparation of financial reports and risk assessments. Interns often use statistical software to model risk and may help automate certain actuarial processes. Collaboration with experienced actuaries and other departments, like underwriting or finance, is common, providing valuable exposure to the broader business. This hands-on experience is a great opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and gain insight into the practical challenges actuaries face in the industry.
