What is an active duty army soldier?

Active Duty Army personnel are full-time soldiers who serve as part of the United States Army. They are committed to serving the nation 24/7 and can be deployed anywhere in the world as needed. Their responsibilities include training, maintaining readiness, and performing various military and support functions. Active duty service members receive benefits such as housing, healthcare, and education assistance while serving.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an active duty army soldier?

To thrive as an Active Duty Army Soldier, you need physical fitness, discipline, teamwork, and the completion of required training such as Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. Familiarity with military protocols, weapons systems, and secure communication technology is essential, along with any role-specific certifications. Strong leadership, resilience, and adaptability are standout soft skills for working effectively in high-pressure and dynamic environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for mission success, personal safety, and effective unit cohesion under challenging conditions.

What are common challenges faced by new active duty army soldiers during their first year of service?

New Active Duty Army soldiers often face challenges adjusting to the structured environment, strict discipline, and physical demands of military life. Many also experience homesickness and must learn to balance personal responsibilities with the expectations of their unit. Adapting to teamwork and following a chain of command are crucial, as is developing resilience to handle both mental and physical stress. Thankfully, support systems like unit leaders, chaplains, and mentorship programs are available to help new soldiers succeed during this transition.

Job description

SERVING WHEN NEEDED
Unlike active duty, Army Reserve Soldiers serve part-time, allowing them to earn an extra paycheck, go to school, or work a civilian job while still maintaining many of the benefits of military service.
WHAT IS THE ARMY RESERVE?
The Army Reserve is the Army’s pool of extra resources and personnel. Reserve Soldiers perform critical Army jobs on a part-time basis.
WHEN WILL I SERVE?
You will spend one weekend a month on duty and two weeks a year in training. Soldiers in the Army Reserve may be called to active duty to provide their expertise. Your total service contract length in the Army Reserve may range from three to six years, depending on your Army Reserve job.
WHERE WILL I LIVE?
Unlike serving on Active Duty, you will be able to live anywhere in the United States. If you are planning on attending college or advancing within your civilian career, Army Reserve service will provide you with the flexibility to live where you choose.
WHAT'S THE PAY LIKE?
Even though you will spend a limited amount of your time on duty, Army Reserve Soldiers earn competitive salaries and have access to a wide range of benefits. As a Private, for example, you will make more than $3,000 a year, and you’ll receive health care, retirement, and education benefits. As you move up in rank, your pay increases.
Simply signing up as an Army Reserve Soldier may qualify you for a list of bonuses and incentives, including a skills bonus, Officer Candidate School bonus, and a translator aide bonus.
Part of the benefit of becoming a Soldier in the Army Reserve is the free time you will have to accomplish your goals. In the Army Reserve, not only will you have time to complete school, but you’ll have the money for it too. Soldiers qualify for a variety of education funding opportunities for their military service, including the Montgomery GI Bill Kicker, the Army Reserve Education Assistance Program, and more.
DO ARMY RESERVE GET DEPLOYED?
Generally, Active Duty Soldiers are the ones who are deployed overseas, while Army Reserve Soldiers fill their positions at home, but there are times of great need when Reserve Soldiers may be deployed.
General Qualifications:
  • Must have an interest in joining the Army.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
  • 17 to 34 years old.
  • Healthy and in good physical condition.
  • In good moral standing with no felony-level offenses.
  • Must be able to meet height/weight standards.
  • No major medical procedures that would prohibit you from service.
  • No tattoos on the hands, neck, or face.

Compensation:
  • Up to $20,000 enlistment bonuses.
  • Up to $115,000 for additional education benefits
  • 30 days vacation with pay per year
  • Additional living expenses for those who have dependents
  • Clothing and food allowance
  • Centrally located Education and Financial Advisors
  • Travel

Education:
The Post-9/11 GI Bill
The most popular GI Bill program, the Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to full college tuition, as well as money for housing and books. Paid directly to the school, the program covers up to full tuition for public, in-state schools and up to $25,000 per year at private or foreign schools, depending on your length of service.
The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve
This program helps members of the Army Reserve and Army National Guard pay for education benefits for a maximum of 36 months, in return for a six-year service commitment. These benefits must be used while you are serving and end when you stop serving.
In addition to college and university tuition, all GI Bill programs cover training and certifications including:
  • Online schooling and correspondence courses
  • Part-time schooling
  • Entrepreneurship training for those interested in starting a small business
  • Flight school
  • Licensing and certification courses
  • Vocational training and trade schools
  • National testing
  • On-the-job training
  • Tutorial assistance

Apply now and within 24-48 hours, you will receive an email/text from our Army virtual recruiting station.
Thank you!
