Job Title: Drupal Software Engineer, Senior

Job Overview: The Drupal Software Engineer, Senior serves as a senior technical lead supporting the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) enterprise web platform. This role is responsible for the engineering, operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of DOT’s Drupal-based Content Management System (CMS) and any future CMS platforms adopted during the BPA period of performance.

This position requires a minimum of ten (10) years of overall professional software development experience, including at least eight (8) years of hands-on Drupal CMS platform engineering experience within controlled federal or similarly regulated environments. The role places a strong emphasis on security, accessibility (Section 508/WCAG), automated testing, integrations, performance optimization, and reliable deployments.

Key Responsibilities

Drupal Platform Engineering & Operations

  • Perform ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M) of the DOT Drupal CMS platform, including Drupal core and contributed module updates, patching, upgrades, and compatibility validation.
  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise Drupal templates, content types, workflows, and reusable components aligned with DOT standards and governance.
  • Monitor and implement Drupal community releases to ensure platform stability, security, and performance.

Integrations & Enhancements

  • Implement and support integrations with analytics and optimization tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager), search services (e.g., DigitalGov Search), identity and access mechanisms (including PIV and MFA), and external APIs.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors such as Acquia, Akamai, and other CMS-related service providers to support hosting, CDN, authentication, and performance services.

Security, Accessibility & Compliance

  • Apply secure coding practices and support implementation of security controls in collaboration with DOT OCIO and Chief Information Security Office (CISO).
  • Support vulnerability remediation, configuration management, and compliance with federal security requirements.
  • Lead accessibility-first development and remediation efforts to ensure compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and WCAG 2.0/2.1 AA standards.

Testing, Release & Quality Assurance

  • Build, maintain, and execute automated and functional test suites; perform regression testing and resolve defects.
  • Coordinate release engineering across development, test, staging, and production environments, including CI/CD alignment, deployment validation, and rollback planning.
  • Support quality assurance activities throughout the system development life cycle (SDLC), including O&M releases and enhancement efforts.

Performance, Reliability & Support

  • Support platform performance tuning, availability improvements, and disaster recovery readiness.
  • Provide operational and on-call/after-hours support for urgent issues impacting the DOT Drupal environment, acting as an intermediary among DOT teams, vendors, and contractors as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) or more years of overall professional software development experience, with a minimum of eight (8) years of specialized Drupal CMS engineering experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience supporting enterprise CMS platforms in federal or similarly regulated environments, with disciplined SDLC, testing, release management, and documentation practices.
  • Strong knowledge of web accessibility implementation and remediation practices in compliance with Section 508 and WCAG standards.
  • Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, multi-environment deployments, and change management.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with government stakeholders, security teams, infrastructure providers, and cross-functional technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Certifications

  • Acquia Certified Developer – Drupal and/or Acquia Certified Site Builder
  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate or AWS Solutions Architect – Associate
