Acoustics Engineering focuses on sound behavior, noise control, and environmental sound design, often in construction and industrial contexts. Audio Engineering centers on recording, mixing, and producing sound for entertainment and media. While both involve sound, their applications, environments, and required skills differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by acoustics engineers when working on building projects?

Acoustics engineers often face challenges such as balancing soundproofing with architectural aesthetics, meeting strict building codes, and accommodating budget constraints. Collaboration with architects, contractors, and other engineers is crucial to ensure that acoustical solutions integrate seamlessly into the overall design. Additionally, acoustics engineers must conduct detailed site assessments and simulations to anticipate real-world sound behavior, making adaptability and communication key skills for success in these projects.

What is acoustics engineering?

Acoustics engineering is a branch of engineering focused on the study and application of sound and vibration. Acoustics engineers design, analyze, and control sound in various environments, such as buildings, vehicles, and public spaces, to ensure optimal sound quality and reduce unwanted noise. Their work involves understanding how sound waves behave and interact with different materials and structures, often using specialized equipment and simulation software. Acoustics engineering plays a crucial role in industries like construction, automotive, aerospace, and entertainment.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior acoustics engineers or specialized engineering managers in high-demand industries can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership roles. Salaries vary based on location, company size, and expertise, often including bonuses and stock options for top-tier professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acoustics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acoustics Engineer, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in acoustics, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with specialized software such as MATLAB, EASE, or CAD tools, along with relevant certifications like Institute of Acoustics (IOA) membership, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set candidates apart in this field. These competencies are vital for designing, analyzing, and implementing solutions that enhance sound quality and control noise in diverse environments.

Job description

This Opportunity

WSP is currently searching for an Environmental Acoustics and Permitting Consultant with our New York, NY or Valhalla, NY offices.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.

This position provides technical assistance and guidance across acoustics (noise/vibration) and environmental permitting projects, with an expected workload of approximately 70% acoustics and 30% broader permitting / multidisciplinary environmental support. It involves producing accurate, concise technical deliverables and documentation regarding project conditions and findings, and ensuring work is delivered to a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

The successful candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of defined tasks and driving them forward day-to-day in collaboration with senior staff and multidisciplinary teams - working through routine ambiguities independently and escalating key issues/decisions appropriately to protect quality, scope, and schedule.

 Your Impact

Acoustics / Noise / Vibration (Primary Focus)

  • Support the delivery of terrestrial noise and vibration assessments for power generation, power transmission, substations, and other linear energy infrastructure projects, including both construction and operational evaluations.
  • Conduct and document noise and vibration field surveys/monitoring, including data collection and interpretation to support project reporting and permitting deliverables.
  • Undertake predictive noise modelling for complex energy and infrastructure projects using CadnaA (preferred) or equivalent software, including development of robust model inputs, calibration assumptions, mitigation testing, and interpretation of results against applicable criteria and local/state requirements.
  • Support the preparation of clear, technically sound reports and client-ready deliverables, including noise impact assessments, construction noise analyses, technical memoranda, and supporting documentation for environmental permitting and regulatory submissions.
  • Review and interpret field data and background information; develop conclusions and practical recommendations to support project teams and clients.
  • Support preparation of proposals and scope/budget development by defining technical approach, level of effort, program assumptions, and key project risks for acoustic and vibration workstreams.

Environmental Permitting & Multidisciplinary Support (Secondary Focus)

  • Provide technical assistance and guidance for environmental permitting and impact assessment assignments, supporting the development of documentation and inputs needed for regulatory submissions and project delivery.
  • Support office activities such as technical evaluations, coordination support, and preparation/review of project documentation and technical reports.
  • Support field activities as needed (depending on assignments), which may include data collection, environmental sampling support, and/or construction-related documentation and observation.

Work Environment & Delivery Expectations:

  • Work is expected to be both office and field based, depending on current assignments.
  • Candidate is expected to work overtime hours in excess of 8 hours/day, 40 hours / week on an as needed basis
  • Strong work ethic and high degree of flexibility to adjust to changing work priorities.

  • Experience producing accurate and concise documentation and technical reports; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to progress tasks independently with guidance, collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and seeking clarification early when needed.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and ArcGIS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Acoustics/Acoustical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Environmental Engineering/Science or a related discipline.
  • Engineer-In-Training certification.
  • Experience with CadnaA and/or other environmental acoustics modelling tools.
  • Experience undertaking underwater noise impact assessments and/or field measurements, including interpretation of results to support environmental permitting and regulatory submissions.
