The Department of Economic Security, Division of Employment and Rehabilitation Services (DERS) strengthens Arizona communities by bridging and minimizing gaps to employment and independence.
DES is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Accounting Technician with the Unemployment Insurance Tax Unit. This position is responsible for a variety of complex accounting clerical duties using automatic systems. Review, verify, balance, adjust, reconcile and analyze complex fiscal transactions. Prepare a variety of fiscal summaries and perform remittance processing activities.

Travel will be required for State business. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on State business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on State business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code [A.A.C.] R2-10-207.11).
This position may be available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangement). This position has an initial in-office training period of six months.

All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Job Duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Perform remittance processing functions, including handling incoming mail review and batch tax reports, cashier tax payments, reconcile daily work, and create electronic deposits using specialized software.
Maintain accounting transactions on employer accounts in the UI Tax computer system. Review and process adjustments, assessments, and waivers.
Reconcile tax report filings and make necessary corrections. Take incoming telephone calls from employers.
Process returned items, assist with the monthly bank reconciliation, issue Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) Recertifications, and process refund requests.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:
Governmental accounting practices and procedures.
Remittance processing, financial records maintenance, personal computers, software, and customer service techniques.
Skill in:
Research, analysis, and interpretation of financial data
Spreadsheets, organizing and prioritizing work assignments, data entry, verbal and written communication, and problem resolution.
Ability to:
Learn and adhere to department policies, procedures, and regulations.
Adapt to changing priorities, focus on repetitive tasks, and establish and maintain good working relationships with other personnel.

Retirement:

State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), the State sponsored retirement contribution plan and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period. The ASRS defined benefit plan provides for life-long income upon retirement. You will also have the option to participate in a voluntary deferred compensation program to take advantage of tax-deferred retirement investments.
