Position Summary
Trustage is a $6 billion life and property & casualty insurance carrier seeking a Senior Manager, Investment Accounting to own the accounting, reporting, and control environment for the company's full investment portfolio. This role is responsible for GAAP and statutory accounting across fixed income, structured securities, derivatives/hedging programs, commercial and residential mortgage loans and alternative investments (private credit and real estate), and serves as the primary technical accounting resource for investment-related matters across Finance, Treasury, and the Investment Management team. The role leads a small team and partners closely with other teams in Finance - Controllership on quarterly close, external audit, and emerging technical accounting issues.
Job Responsibilities
Technical Accounting, Financial Reporting & Statutory Reporting
  • Own accounting policy and application for the investment portfolio under US GAAP and US STAT.
  • Direct accounting for the company's derivative and hedging programs, including hedge designation, documentation, and effectiveness testing for programs supporting embedded derivative liabilities (e.g., FIA/index-linked products) and other risk management activities.
  • Oversee accounting for alternative investments, including private credit and real estate investments.
  • Prepare and review technical accounting memos and white papers on new investment structures, impairment conclusions, and emerging guidance; present conclusions to the Controller and, as needed, the external auditor.
  • Oversee GAAP and STAT investment disclosures in audit reports
  • Oversee annual statement reporting for invested assets and SVO designation processes.
  • Partner with Risk and Actuarial teams on the investment-related inputs to risk-based capital (RBC) calculations and statutory filings.

Close Process & Controls
  • Lead the monthly and quarterly investment accounting close, including reconciliation of investment sub-ledgers/systems to the Workday general ledger.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls over investment accounting processes.
  • Drive process improvement and automation opportunities within investment accounting workflows.

Audit & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Serve as the primary investment accounting liaison for the external audit (Deloitte), managing PBC requests, control walkthroughs, and resolution of audit issues.
  • Partner with Treasury and the Investment Management team on new investment evaluation, providing feedback, and portfolio strategy from an accounting impact perspective.

People Leadership
  • Manage and develop a small team of investment accounting professionals; set priorities, review work product, and build technical bench strength.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent work experience

  • 7 years of related work experience in finance / accounting
  • 3 years of supervisory experience in finance / accounting
  • CPA; MBA / CMA / CFA preferred
  • Demonstrated Project Management / Process Improvement experience
  • Highly proficient in MS Office Applications; Advanced user of MS Office (Excel) preferred
  • Proven ability to recruit, retain and develop high-quality individuals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and influence business leaders throughout the organization that have varying backgrounds and business acumen
  • Proven thought leader with ability to drive positive change across an organization
  • Ability to prioritize and deploy resources consistent with organizational goals, evaluate alternatives and negotiate for additional resources
  • Proficient with ERP / Financial / Accounting systems (ex. General Ledger, Insurance Annual Statement, etc.); background in Insurance Accounting (STAT & GAAP) preferred

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP investment accounting and NAIC statutory accounting principles.
  • Direct experience with derivative/hedge accounting, including effectiveness testing and documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external audit relationships for investment-related balances.
  • Experience with alternative investment accounting (private credit, private equity, real estate).
  • Experience with Workday Financials and/or investment accounting/portfolio systems (e.g., P.A.M. , Clearwater Analytics, BlackRock Aladdin, or similar).
  • Life insurance product knowledge, particularly fixed indexed annuity or other products with embedded derivatives.
  • People management experience.

Base Salary Range:
$121,500.00 - $182,300.00
