What does an accounting software developer do?

An Accounting Software Developer designs, builds, and maintains software applications that help individuals and businesses manage their financial data and accounting processes. Their work involves understanding accounting principles and requirements to create tools for tasks like invoicing, payroll, expense tracking, and financial reporting. They often collaborate with accountants and end-users to ensure the software is user-friendly, secure, and compliant with financial regulations. These developers may work for software companies, accounting firms, or as independent consultants.

What does an accounting software developer do?

Accounting software developers help create and support applications used for accounting purposes. In this role, you may ensure the software correctly manages each account and transaction, verify that the system can adequately handle any unusual entries that accountants need to make, and run reports to evaluate the current financial situation of your clients. Accounting software developers usually work in teams; because much of the data entered into the system concerns monetary transactions, the primary function of the software focuses on accurate calculations. Software precision and avoiding bugs is even more critical than in other types of programs because of the serious impact that errors could have on customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accounting software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting Software Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of accounting principles, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with accounting software platforms (like QuickBooks or SAP), database systems, and version control tools is typically required, along with knowledge of industry-standard APIs. Excellent problem-solving, communication skills, and attention to detail help developers collaborate with stakeholders and create user-friendly, reliable software. These competencies ensure the creation of effective, compliant, and high-quality accounting solutions that meet business needs.

What are some common challenges accounting software developers face when integrating new features with existing financial systems?

Accounting Software Developers often encounter challenges when integrating new features, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy financial systems and maintaining data integrity across different modules. They must carefully manage version control, adhere to strict security protocols, and thoroughly test to prevent disruptions to critical accounting processes. Collaboration with finance professionals and IT teams is vital to understand business requirements and regulatory compliance, making strong communication skills important for success in this role.

Job description

Thomson Reuters U.S. Income Tax Compliancesoftware is relied upon by the largest multi-national corporations and global accounting firms for theirs and their clients' income tax filings. Our vision is to create the next generation of tax and accounting software eco-system that is highly performant, scalable, reliable and resilient. We have embarked on our journey to transform our monolithic system into microservices by taking advantage of the modern cloud native architecture principles and cloud technologies. We are also building APIs that opens up our eco-system for integrations with our customer's systems. We seek to add a talented, results oriented and innovative software engineer to our team who will help us extend our market leadership into the next generation of our software.

About the role:

  • Ability to balance legacy demands with future vision. Thomson Reuters is an established leader in the tax compliance marketplace, with a long history. So, while our ambitions are very much focused on the future, we need someone who possesses the patience necessary to maintain existing systems while working feverishly to construct the new. Our systems are hosted in public cloud (AWS).
  • Thinking in terms of computing at scale. Liberated from the traditional constraints of legacy data centers and monolithic architectures, you will design and construct elastic, fault-tolerant, high-performance, scalable systems, that are cloud native.
  • Strong Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Skills. You instinctively decompose large scale problem spaces into rich domains that appropriately combine data structures and behavior, that possess elegant layering and a separation of concerns, and you understand principles such as SOLID and Domain Driven Design ("DDD").
  • Agile, collaborative and flexible. We are organized around self-directed, largely autonomous Scrum teams. You work well with others, enjoy opportunities to collaborate and readily adapt as strategies evolve and priorities change.
  • Engineering Excellence. You have at least three years of experience in a variety of contexts during which you've contributed to the construction of scalable, extensible software solutions and systems. You understand technology and possess a passion for excellence. You instinctively partner with the Quality Engineering and Quality Assurance team members, responding immediately to failing test cases and ensuring that quality is engineered from the Inside Out.
  • Bias towards action. You believe that speed and quality aren't mutually exclusive. You've shown good judgment about shipping as fast as possible while still making sure that products are built in a sustainable, responsible way - and you're comfortable making mistakes, provided you learn from them.
  • Passion and energy. Because you love what you do, you bring infectious enthusiasm to all your endeavors. You always perform at your absolute best and see new challenges as an opportunity to contribute, make an impact, and grow.
  • Commitment. At Thomson Reuters, commitment to customer satisfaction and technology excellence permeates everything we do. You care tremendously about delighting our users and ensuring that our market and technical leadership is sustained and extended. You are your harshest critic and hold yourself personally accountable, jumping in and taking ownership of problems that might not even be in your team's scope.

About you:

  • You're a good fit for the role of Fullstack .Net Software Engineer if your background includes:
  • 5 or more years' experience in a software engineering environment, including experience with co-located as well as geographically distributed teams.
  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals in Data Structures and algorithm design. Strong programming experience with .Net Framework and .Net Core, preferably with C#. You will need to have strong object-oriented design and development skills. You possess a solid understanding of object-oriented programming, SOLID, DRY, DDD and core database design principles.
  • Strong experience in designing and developing web applications and REST APIs using ASP.Net or similar frameworks; experience with API gateways a plus.
  • Experience with Angular, AngularJS and Javascript
  • Experience with relational database systems, e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL; No SQL experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with public cloud infrastructure preferably AWS (EC2, S3, ALB, Auto Scaling, RDS, Lambda function, SQS). Experience with Containers (Docker, ECS, Kubernetes) is a plus.
  • Working Experience with AI Developer tools (Claude or Copilot, Cursor)
  • Awareness of CI/CD/DevOps concept and tools. Comfortable with the disciplines of Unit Testing and Test Automation. Worked in an environment in which releasable code is delivered every two weeks.
  • Working experience with Git and GitFlow, pull requests, branching and merging of features across multiple releases and hot fixes.
  • Whether via face-to-face discussion, phone, email, chat, white-boarding, or other collaboration platforms, you must be an effective communicator who can inform, explain, and coordinate, etc.
  • Willingness to learn and support our legacy codebase while the transition to our next-generation is occurring.
  • Ability to build and deliver hands-on technology proof-of-concepts and demonstrations.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum team environments.
  • Results oriented. Detailed oriented. Driven. Take initiative without being asked. Exhibits flexibility when adjusting to new, different, and changing business requirements and decisions.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
