Job description

Job Title- Accounting Manager

Project Location – Hybrid in Saint Louis, MO (downtown).

Duration- Fulltime

Schedule: Flexible work schedules, currently working in a hybrid working environment.

Status: Must be a US citizen.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

 Summary: Our client is recruiting for an accounting manager to take the lead on the daily operations of the accounting department in a dynamic law firm environment.  This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance with applicable laws and firm policies, and the implementation of sound financial practices that support the firm’s strategic goals.    

 Job Description:

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of 3-5 accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and ad hoc financial analysis and report to the CFO and firm leadership.
  • Analyze and report on key performance indicators for practice groups, departments, and individual attorneys.
  • Oversee general ledger functions and manage daily accounting operations including cash flow, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Execute the month-end and year-end close process, including journal entries, bank and account reconciliations, financial statements, and variance analysis.
  • Respond to partners when needed with accurate and timely reports.
  • Conduct quarterly budget reviews with department heads to track expenses and ensure alignment with budgetary goals.
  • Preparation of regulatory reporting; assure compliance with local, state and federal government reporting requirements.
  • Maintain the Firm’s fixed asset ledger and manage annual property tax filings.
  • Manage the accounting and reporting for the Firm’s ancillary businesses, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. 
  • Support year-end audits and coordinate with external auditors under the guidance of the CFO.
  • Assist with 401(k) audit and year-end tax preparation.
  • Manage trust accounting and ensure IOLTA compliance, maintaining meticulous records.
  • Strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures; develop and document policies to ensure proper segregation of duties. 
  • Deliver onboarding and training on accounting policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the Firm’s legal practice management system (Aderant) including general ledger, billing, collections, invoicing and expense modules.  Develop new reports as deemed necessary.  Experience with SSRS reporting is a plus.   Lead system upgrades, integrations and testing for accounting software and reporting tools. 
  • Work closely with the Billing Manager and Collections Manager in sound AR and collection strategy.
  • Maintain records for the Firm’s 501(3) (c) charities, including year-end tax preparation and coordination with tax accountants. 

Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, macros, etc.).
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the firm.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional client service -both external and internal.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
