What is the difference between Accounting Job vs Bookkeeper?

AspectAccounting JobBookkeeper
CertificationsCPA, CMA, or accounting degreesNone required, but certifications like Certified Bookkeeper are common
Work EnvironmentCorporate offices, accounting firms, or finance departmentsSmall businesses, accounting firms, or freelance settings
Job ResponsibilitiesFinancial analysis, reporting, tax preparation, and complianceRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers, and reconciling accounts
Industry UsageWidely used across industries for financial managementCommon in small to medium businesses for day-to-day bookkeeping

While both accounting jobs and bookkeepers handle financial data, accounting jobs typically involve more complex analysis, reporting, and compliance tasks, often requiring certifications. Bookkeepers focus on recording and maintaining accurate financial records, usually in smaller business settings. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are some common challenges faced by accountants when working with cross-functional teams?

Accountants often collaborate closely with departments such as operations, sales, and IT, which can present challenges in terms of communication and data accuracy. It's essential to clearly explain financial concepts to non-financial colleagues and to ensure that the information shared is both timely and accurate. Navigating differing priorities and deadlines can also require strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Successfully addressing these challenges helps accountants provide valuable insights that support overall business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Accounting job, and why are they important?

To thrive in an accounting job, a strong grasp of financial principles, attention to detail, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance are essential. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, SAP, or Excel, and certifications such as CPA are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, integrity, and effective communication skills help accountants stand out in their field. These skills are vital to ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain compliance, and support informed business decisions.

What are accounting jobs?

Accounting jobs involve recording, analyzing, and reporting financial transactions for individuals, businesses, or organizations. Accountants ensure that financial records are accurate, taxes are paid properly and on time, and that financial operations run efficiently. Common roles include auditors, tax accountants, management accountants, and forensic accountants. These professionals may work in public accounting firms, corporate accounting departments, or government agencies, providing essential services that support financial decision-making and compliance.

Job description

Accounting Director Opportunity

Are you an Audit Manager in a nonprofit CPA practice who wants your work to have a broader impact?

This Accounting Director role may be a great next step for someone who wants to use their nonprofit audit, GAAP, financial statement, and client management experience in a more proactive, year-round advisory role.

At eCratchit, you'll work with dozens of nonprofit organizations, helping them strengthen their accounting operations, improve financial reporting, and make better-informed decisions. Instead of focusing primarily on year-end audit work, you'll be part of an ongoing client relationship that directly supports each organization's mission.

eCratchit, Inc. is an established and growing finance and accounting firm with a strong national client base. Since 2000, we have worked with approximately 400 nonprofit and for-profit organizations, helping clients build strong financial foundations so they can focus on their mission.

We are looking for a proactive, forward-thinking Accounting Director who enjoys leading teams, advising clients, solving problems, and supporting mission-driven organizations.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Act as the Accounting Director and outsourced CFO-level resource for a portfolio of nonprofit clients
  • Build trusted relationships with executive directors, finance committees, boards, and client leadership teams
  • Oversee monthly close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and balance sheet review processes
  • Review and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, cash flow, and key financial trends
  • Present financial results and insights to client leadership in a clear, practical, and mission-focused way
  • Help clients understand their financial position and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Advise clients on budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, grant reporting, restricted funds, and nonprofit accounting best practices
  • Support audit preparation and serve as a knowledgeable liaison between the client and external auditors
  • Supervise, mentor, and support staff accountants working across multiple client engagements
  • Identify ways to improve workflows, reporting accuracy, systems, and overall client service
  • Work with a great team of likeminded professionals
  • Provide proactive guidance that helps nonprofit organizations strengthen operations and advance their missions

This Could Be a Great Fit If You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field
  • CPA designation preferred
  • 4 to 6 years of accounting or audit experience
  • 2 to 5 years of nonprofit audit or nonprofit accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of GAAP financial statements
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, reconciliations, and balance sheet analysis
  • General ledger experience
  • Budgeting and forecasting experience preferred
  • Strong communication and client management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-oriented environment
  • A genuine desire to support nonprofit organizations and their missions

Why Join eCratchit?

  • Full-time position
  • Flexible working environment
  • Work-from-home opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and ancillary benefits
  • Collaborative, supportive team culture
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact across many nonprofit organizations

eCratchit is proud to have been named one of Accounting Today's Best Accounting Firms to Work For in 2023 and recognized among Accounting Today's Top 100 Firms and Regional Leaders in 2022.

If you are a nonprofit Audit Manager looking for a change, this Accounting Director role offers the opportunity to take your skills beyond the audit and into meaningful, ongoing support for mission-driven organizations.
