Job description

Position: Finance Intern - Medically Tailored Meal Invoicing

Department: Finance

Supervisor: Chief Financial Officer

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Employment Status: Internship

Hours: Max 20 Hours / Week

ABOUT US

Rethink Food is a chef-led nonprofit partnering with restaurants to better feed communities. Through strong partnerships with local restaurants and community-based organizations, we work with a responsive, hyperlocal network that provides culturally celebrated, nutritious meals. Since 2017, we've served over 35 million meals and reinvested more than $157 million into local economies.

Our work falls into three core areas:

  • Building the Network: We connect restaurants, community-based organizations, and food donors to deliver meals where they're needed most.
  • Setting the Example: Through our Sustainable Community Kitchen, we demonstrate what dignified, community-centered food access can look like.
  • Advocating for Change: We champion policy and systems change to create a more sustainable, equitable food future for all.

ROLE SUMMARY

The Finance Intern will support the Finance team with invoicing operations for our Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) program - a Medicaid-funded meal delivery program that provides free, dietitian-designed meal boxes to eligible members through NYC's 1115 waiver. The intern will gain hands-on experience processing and reconciling invoices, managing vendor documentation, and supporting the day-to-day financial operations of a growing multi-program nonprofit. Full on-the-job training is provided.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the MTM invoicing cycle: review, process, and track invoices from restaurant partners and service providers.
  • Reconcile invoice data against delivery records and meal counts in internal systems.
  • Assist with vendor documentation, including W-9s, and ACH banking information
  • Flag discrepancies and work with Finance staff to resolve them in a timely way.
  • Support other Finance team tasks as capacity allows, including budget tracking and funder reporting preparation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current student in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program, majoring in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, or Non-profit Management.
  • Strong interest in nonprofit finance and accounting.
  • Comfort working with numbers and spreadsheets (Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel).
  • Experience with Google Workspace.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Hard-working, dedicated, and self-motivated.
  • Attention to detail and high systems aptitude.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changes.
  • Ability to abide by and uphold professional standards.
  • Committed to Rethink's mission and values.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS

Rethink internships are based on mentorship and skill development. We are dedicated to creating an internship program that provides participants with a thorough understanding of the organization's mission, values, and operations. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in cross-functional team development, peer-to-peer advisement, all staff meetings, and workshops led by the Rethink Team.

This internship presents an outstanding opportunity for those who have an interest in a growing social impact nonprofit.

Compensation: $20.00 per hour
