Accounting Manager - Business Unit Support
Reports To: Business Unit Controller
Department: Accounting & Finance
FLSA Status: Exempt
Direct Reports: Staff Accountants, Senior Staff Accountants
Location (Onsite): Denver, CO
Compensation: $115,000 - $135,000 + 15% bonus
THE OPPORTUNITY
Why This Role Matters
Meriton is seeking an experienced and driven Accounting Manager to join our growing team in a critical business unit support role. Reporting directly to the Business Unit Controller, you will own key components of the financial close and reporting cycle while leading and developing a team of Staff and Senior Staff Accountants. This is a high-visibility position within a fast-paced, high-growth environment where your work directly supports business unit leadership and contributes to the integrity of Meriton's financial operations.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, self-starting professional who thrives in a collaborative environment, brings strong Excel and ERP skills, and is ready to take meaningful ownership of accounting processes.
THE ROLE
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
• Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of Staff and Senior Staff Accountants, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
• Assign and prioritize workloads to ensure timely completion of all accounting tasks and reporting deadlines.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and professional development planning for direct reports.
• Identify training needs and support career growth opportunities within the accounting team.
Financial Close & Reporting
• Oversee and actively participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established deadlines.
• Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules prepared by the accounting team.
• Prepare and/or review financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses for presentation to the Controller and senior leadership.
• Ensure timely and accurate recording of all financial transactions in the general ledger.
Internal Controls & Compliance
• Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
• Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors; coordinate audit requests, prepare schedules, and facilitate the audit process.
• Monitor and enforce adherence to accounting policies and procedures across the team.
Accounting Operations
• Work together with Shared Services teams responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and general ledger, as needed.
• Review and approve reconciliations of bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and intercompany transactions.
• Coordinate with other departments (e.g., FP&A, Operations, HR) to ensure accurate financial reporting and resolution of accounting issues.
• Support the preparation of schedules and analysis for tax filings, budgets, and forecasts.
Process Improvement & Systems
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of accounting operations.
• Leverage accounting systems and technology to automate routine tasks and improve reporting capabilities.
• Assist the Controller with special projects, system implementations, and ad hoc financial analyses as needed.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The Required Profile
Education & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience; HVAC or construction industry experience is a plus
• Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or team lead capacity, managing Staff or Senior Accountants
• Solid command of GAAP and proven experience managing month-end and year-end close processes
• CPA license or active candidacy desired but not required
Technical Skills
• Experience with integrated ERP systems; Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) is a strong plus
• Fluent in Microsoft Office - advanced Excel skills are essential; proficiency in Word and PowerPoint expected
• Demonstrated ability to prepare and review financial statements, reconciliations, and variance analyses

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Effective oral and written communication, including the ability to present information clearly to leadership, customers, and cross-functional colleagues. Strong mathematical aptitude covering financial calculations, ratios, and data interpretation. Demonstrated reasoning ability to manage competing priorities, solve problems methodically, and execute on instructions delivered in written, oral, or diagram form.
Physical Requirements
This role is primarily office-based. Regular use of a computer keyboard and telephone; occasional requirements to stand, walk, lift, and carry materials up to 25 lbs. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
