JOB TITLE: General Accountant

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Finance

JOB SUMMARY


The General Accountant is responsible for supporting the finance and accounting team in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with month-end and year-end close processes. This role ensures compliance with internal controls and accounting standards while contributing to the overall financial health of the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


General Ledger Accounting

  • Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
  • Review transactions for accuracy and proper account classification.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.

 

Account Reconciliations

  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve reconciling items timely.
  • Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for assigned accounts.
  • Ensure reconciliations comply with Company policies and close deadlines.

 

Financial Reporting

  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze fluctuations in account balances and explain significant variances.
  • Support management reporting and ad hoc financial analyses.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting activities.

 

Balance Sheet Accounts

  • Record fixed asset additions, retirements, and disposals.
  • Maintain the fixed asset register.
  • Maintain schedules and record monthly amortization.
  • Prepare recurring accruals and related journal entries.
  • Review accrued liabilities and ensure timely reversals when appropriate.

 

Compliance and Audit Support

  • Maintain documentation supporting accounting transactions.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests.
  • Support compliance and internal control activities, where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and Company accounting policies.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and increase efficiency.
  • Assist with ERP implementations, system enhancements, and automation initiatives.
  • Participate in special projects and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities across all levels of the organization.
  • Advanced computer skills on MS Office, including Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft GreatPlains.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
  • Understanding of the month-end close process.
  • Experience preparing journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, formulas).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Public accounting internship or experience is a plus.
  • Experience with ERP systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, etc.) preferred.
  • CPA or CPA candidate is a plus.
