The Role and Why It's Important

The Cash Accountability role is essential to keeping the store's finances accurate and secure every single day. In this role, you'll be responsible for counting and balancing registers, managing the safe, investigating discrepancies, and ensuring cashiers have everything they need to serve customers smoothly.

What You'll Do

No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile and making every interaction a positive one

  • Count registers after each cashier shift across all areas of the store and balance each register for cash and coin

  • Ensure each cash pull is placed in the safe and that registers have adequate cash on hand, loaning money from the safe to registers as necessary

  • Sort checks, coupons, payouts, and charges and place them in the appropriate register files

  • Calculate cash over and short amounts and investigate any discrepancies

  • Approve checks written for cash or payment of merchandise purchases

  • Reconcile money orders, Western Union, utilities, bank cards, gift cards, and other applicable items

  • Perform all register operations functions and stay knowledgeable of look-up numbers, department numbers, and item features

  • Troubleshoot mechanical register issues such as receipt paper jams and act as cashier where applicable

  • Train cashiers and maintain an ongoing training program

  • Operate menu-driven computer programs using a mouse, 10-key keypad, and alphanumeric keyboard

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers accurately and efficiently

  • Carry out detailed written and verbal instructions with care and precision

  • File, post, sort, and organize materials and paperwork

  • Read and follow product safety information as needed

  • Maintain a high level of discretion and integrity when handling confidential financial information

  • Communicate professionally with customers, cashiers, and store leadership

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of GM, Perishables, and Store Operations; Service Managers

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required

  • 6 months to 1 year of similar or related experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is primarily performed in a store environment where you'll handle cash, registers, and financial records throughout your shift. There is occasional pressure to meet deadlines, and you'll regularly work with sensitive financial information. Safety and confidentiality are always a priority.
