What does an account manager in technology do?

An Account Manager in Technology is responsible for managing relationships with clients who use a company's technology products or services. They serve as the main point of contact for clients, help address their needs, and ensure they are satisfied with the solutions provided. Account Managers in this field work to grow their accounts by identifying new business opportunities and coordinating with internal teams such as sales, support, and product development. They must have a strong understanding of both the technology being offered and the client's business goals, ensuring that solutions are tailored effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account manager in technology?

To thrive as a Technology Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, technical understanding of IT solutions, and a background in business or related fields, often supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, basic knowledge of cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) are highly valued. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you manage client expectations and drive satisfaction. These skills are crucial for bridging the gap between client needs and technical solutions, ensuring long-term account growth and customer retention.

Account Managers in the technology sector often navigate rapidly changing products and solutions, which can make it challenging to stay informed and provide clients with up-to-date recommendations. Additionally, aligning client needs with technical capabilities requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. To overcome these challenges, successful Account Managers regularly participate in product training, foster close collaboration with technical teams, and proactively communicate with clients to anticipate and address issues before they escalate.

Marketing Technology Account ManagerFull Time • Fully Remote – US (Must be within driving distance of Roseville, MN)
About the Role:
DirectClicks is seeking an experienced Technology Account Manager to manage client relationships, support revenue growth, and help strengthen long-term partnerships.
This is a client-facing, revenue-focused position designed for someone with previous experience working in the technology, software, or SaaS industry. The ideal candidate has managed a portfolio of business clients, worked toward sales or revenue goals, and is comfortable identifying opportunities for renewals, upsells, cross-sells, and account expansion.
While DirectClicks operates in the digital space, this is not a digital marketing, design, or technical implementation position. We are specifically looking for someone whose background is rooted in B2B account management, sales, business development, or revenue-generating client relationships within a technology or software environment.

This position is part of our ongoing growth and talent pipeline efforts as we continue building our future account management team.
What You’ll Do:
  • Own and develop relationships across a portfolio of business clients, serving as a trusted point of contact.
  • Identify opportunities to grow existing accounts through renewals, upsells, cross-sells, and expanded services.
  • Work toward established account growth, retention, and revenue goals.
  • Lead proactive client conversations to understand business needs, priorities, and future opportunities.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure client needs, deliverables, and expectations are communicated effectively.
  • Support new client onboarding while building strong relationships from the beginning.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up, account documentation, and pipeline visibility.
What We're Looking For:
  • Previous experience working for a technology, software, or SaaS company is required.
  • Proven experience in account management, sales, business development, account executive, customer success, or another client-facing revenue role.
  • Experience in a commission-based, quota-carrying, or performance-based compensation role is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to own client relationships while driving retention, renewals, upsells, cross-sells, or account expansion.
  • B2B sales or account management experience is highly preferred, particularly experience working directly with business owners or decision-makers.
  • Strong consultative communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable managing multiple client relationships in a remote environment.
The Background We're Targeting:

Strong candidates may currently or previously have held titles such as:
Account Manager • SaaS Account Manager • Account Executive • Customer Success Manager • Client Success Manager • Business Development Manager • Strategic Account Manager • Client Relationship Manager

Experience should demonstrate meaningful ownership of client relationships and revenue, rather than primarily creative, marketing operations, technical support, software development, IT, or implementation responsibilities.
Work Environment:

This is a fully remote position; however, candidates must live within driving distance of Roseville, Minnesota and be available for periodic in-person team collaboration and meetings.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Base compensation plus commission opportunities
  • Target first-year earnings (OTE) of $85,000+ based on performance
  • Monthly team bonus opportunities
  • 3% retirement match
  • Health insurance with 50% employer contribution
  • PTO and company holidays

Flexible work from home options available.
