Account Manager Director information

What does an account manager director do?

An Account Manager Director oversees a team of account managers and is responsible for developing and maintaining strong client relationships at a strategic level. They ensure client satisfaction, manage large or key accounts, and coordinate with internal teams to deliver solutions that meet client needs. Additionally, they often play a significant role in driving business growth, negotiating contracts, and contributing to the overall account strategy of the organization.

How does an account manager director typically balance strategic client relationships with internal team leadership responsibilities?

An Account Manager Director often serves as both the primary liaison for key clients and the leader of a team of account managers. Balancing these responsibilities involves setting clear priorities, delegating tasks effectively, and maintaining strong communication channels with both clients and internal stakeholders. Directors are expected to drive strategic growth for client accounts while mentoring their teams, ensuring high-quality service delivery, and aligning team goals with organizational objectives. This dual focus requires excellent time management and the ability to anticipate and address challenges proactively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account manager director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Manager Director, you need robust experience in client relationship management, sales strategy, and a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, data analytics tools, and sometimes industry-specific certifications are typically expected. Outstanding leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help you build strong client partnerships and effectively lead account teams. These skills are crucial for driving revenue growth, retaining key clients, and ensuring successful team and client outcomes.

Job description

About River Health
River Health's mission is to be the best health plan for hourly workers by making healthcare affordable, reliable, and easy to use with the tap of a button.
Here is what makes River Health different:
1. Complexity & Cost
We started River Health because healthcare is too expensive and more complex than it should be. We are building a new system that connects you directly to your healthcare provider and brings transparency to the billing process.
2. Patient Experience
Accessing healthcare should be stress-free, if not enjoyable. We invest resources into improving the care delivery process to delight our members.
ABOUT RIVER HEALTH
River Health's mission is to be the best health plan for hourly workers by making healthcare affordable, reliable, and easy to use.
We serve the people staffing kitchens, hotel front desks, retail stores, and other hourly workplaces. Our plans connect members directly with healthcare providers, simplify the care experience, and bring greater affordability and transparency to healthcare.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Winning an employer is hard. Keeping and growing that relationship is where the business is built.
This role will lead River Health's relationships with employer clients after the sale closes. You will own a portfolio of key accounts, make sure clients renew, help their employees enroll in and use their benefits, and grow relationships where River can deliver additional value.
Depending on experience, this role may be hired as a Senior Account Manager or Director of Client Success. At either level, you will personally own important client relationships and help build River's post-sale operating model. At the Director level, you will also manage the Client Operations function and help build and lead the broader Client Success team.
You will be accountable for three things: retaining our clients, earning their trust, and growing accounts the right way. If our clients stay and expand, River Health works. If they churn, nothing else we do matters.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Personally own a portfolio of employer accounts and serve as a trusted partner to senior client and broker stakeholders.
• Run a structured renewal process. Track account health, identify risks early, forecast renewals accurately, and build the case for renewal well before the formal conversation begins.
• Partner with clients to increase employee enrollment, activation, and utilization. Hourly workers do not use benefits they do not understand or trust, and engagement is one of the strongest drivers of client retention.
• Build account plans and lead quarterly business reviews that provide useful insight into enrollment, utilization, value delivered, outstanding issues, and future opportunities.
• Identify expansion opportunities and lead them through close in coordination with River's sales, product, and operations teams.
• Coordinate closely with Client Operations across implementation, eligibility, ongoing maintenance, and service issues to provide clients with a consistent experience.
• Establish clear processes for account health, renewal forecasting, client communications, quarterly business reviews, and escalation management.
• Help define and build the future Client Success organization as River grows.
ADDITIONAL DIRECTOR-LEVEL RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates hired at the Director level will also:
• Manage and develop the Client Operations team, establishing clear responsibilities, priorities, and performance expectations.
• Oversee client implementation and ongoing service delivery, ensuring risks and operational issues are identified and resolved quickly.
• Establish the team's operating cadence, performance metrics, and standards for client management.
• Hire, onboard, and manage additional Account Managers as River's client base grows.
WHAT YOU NEED
• 4+ years of experience in account management, client success, benefits consulting, or another post-sale commercial role, ideally in health benefits, insurance, HR technology, or a product sold to employers.
• Demonstrated ownership of renewals, retention, and account expansion, with specific results you can discuss.
• Experience managing complex client relationships across implementation, ongoing service, and renewal.
• Comfort working with brokers and benefits advisors as important stakeholders in the client relationship.
• Strong executive communication and the ability to build credibility with HR, benefits, finance, and operational leaders.
• The ability to use enrollment, utilization, revenue, and service data to identify risks and recommend action.
• A willingness to investigate and resolve problems rather than simply routing them elsewhere.
• Comfort operating in an early-stage environment where you will help build the process while also doing the work.
FOR CONSIDERATION AT THE DIRECTOR LEVEL
• Experience directly managing and developing client-facing team members.
• Experience building or improving a Client Success, Account Management, or Client Operations function.
• Demonstrated responsibility for team-level retention, renewal, or revenue performance.
• The ability to move between executive client strategy, people management, and detailed operational problem-solving.
NICE TO HAVE
• Experience serving employers with hourly, part-time, seasonal, or distributed workforces, particularly in food and beverage, hospitality, retail, or franchise systems.
• Working knowledge of employer health benefits, brokers, eligibility, enrollment, and plan design.
• Experience owning an employee activation or benefits-utilization strategy, with a clear point of view on what drives engagement.
• Familiarity with voluntary benefits, payroll deduction, or employer-sponsored healthcare products.
SCHEDULE AND LOCATION
Full-time. Hybrid in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
BENEFITS
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• Paid time off and company holidays
• Training and professional development
• Transportation stipend
