What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Inclusive Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Inclusive Designer, you need a solid understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), user-centered design principles, and experience with digital product development. Familiarity with tools like screen readers, accessibility testing software, and certifications like Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) are often expected. Strong collaboration, empathy, and problem-solving skills help designers understand diverse user needs and effectively communicate solutions across teams. These competencies ensure digital products are accessible to all users, fostering inclusivity and broadening audience reach.

How does an Accessibility Inclusive Design professional typically collaborate with developers and product teams during a project?

Accessibility Inclusive Design professionals work closely with developers, product managers, and UX/UI teams throughout the project lifecycle. They participate in design reviews, provide accessibility guidelines, and often conduct audits or usability testing to identify and resolve barriers for users with disabilities. Regular communication and collaborative problem-solving are key, ensuring that accessibility is integrated from the initial concept through to final implementation. This approach not only helps meet legal requirements but also improves the overall user experience for everyone.

What is the difference between Accessibility Inclusive Design vs Accessibility Specialist?

AspectAccessibility Inclusive DesignAccessibility Specialist

Work EnvironmentDesign teams, UX departments, product developmentQuality assurance, testing teams, compliance departments
Industry UsageUsed in product design, user experience, digital content creationUsed in testing, auditing, ensuring accessibility compliance

Accessibility Inclusive Design focuses on creating products and interfaces that are accessible from the outset, emphasizing inclusive user experiences. Accessibility Specialists primarily evaluate and ensure existing products meet accessibility standards. Both roles are essential in making digital content accessible, but they differ in their focus—design versus compliance testing.

What is Accessibility Inclusive Design?

Accessibility Inclusive Design is an approach to creating products, services, and environments that are usable by as many people as possible, including those with disabilities. It goes beyond simply meeting accessibility standards and focuses on designing experiences that are welcoming and functional for everyone, regardless of ability. This involves considering a wide range of needs—such as visual, auditory, cognitive, and physical—and integrating accessibility from the very beginning of the design process. By practicing inclusive design, organizations not only comply with legal requirements but also create better experiences for all users.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

We're a team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers relentlessly committed to a culture of safety and innovation. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and requires your dedication and keen attention to ensure safe and repeatable spaceflight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space, fulfilling Blue Origin's vision of millions living and working in space to benefit Earth.

As part of our Enterprise Technology (ET) team, you'll help develop the digital infrastructure essential for building the road to space. This is a platform engineering role-you'll be building the thing that builds the thing.

Join our dynamic team as a Senior Front-End Engineer building an AI-powered UI platform that connects data to user-defined composable UIs. You'll work with an AI-first mentality with guardrails, creating the foundation that enables engineers, designers, and product managers across Blue Origin to build interfaces faster and more consistently.

What You'll Work With

  • AI code generation & LLM integration
  • Domain-specific languages (DSL)
  • Self-evolving design systems
  • React & React Native
  • GraphQL
  • TypeScript

Key Responsibilities:

Platform Architecture & Development

  • Design and implement core platform capabilities that translate configurations into production-ready React and React Native components
  • Build DSL parsers, validators, and code generation engines that ensure design system compliance
  • Develop infrastructure for versioning, rollback, and safe evolution of generated UIs
  • Architect systems that balance AI-powered flexibility with governance and quality controls

Design System Engineering

  • Collaborate with design system teams to build self-evolving capabilities powered by AI
  • Implement contract enforcement mechanisms that validate generated UIs against component library standards
  • Create tooling that enables design system changes to propagate efficiently across applications
  • Bridge the gap between design tools and executable code

Technical Leadership & Governance

  • Define and maintain technical standards, contracts, and schemas that developers will build against
  • Establish performance budgets, accessibility requirements, and quality gates for platform-generated code
  • Lead architectural decisions for multi-runtime support with shared abstractions
  • Drive technical design reviews ensuring long-term scalability and maintainability

Collaboration & Enablement

  • Partner closely with designers, AI/ML engineers, backend developers, and product teams
  • Mentor engineers across the organization on platform usage and best practices
  • Work with product managers to translate customer needs into platform capabilities
  • Provide thought leadership on AI-assisted development and design system governance

Innovation & Evolution

  • Stay at the forefront of AI-assisted development and declarative UI frameworks
  • Prototype and evaluate new technologies that could enhance platform capabilities
  • Drive continuous improvement based on usage telemetry and developer feedback

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of front-end development experience, with substantial time shipping production software to real users
  • Expert-level mastery of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript
  • Deep experience with React (required) and React Native (strongly preferred), including component architecture, state management, and performance optimization
  • Platform/tooling development experience: You've built tools, frameworks, or platforms that other engineers use
  • Strong systems thinking: Ability to design abstractions, contracts, and APIs that balance flexibility with governance
  • GraphQL expertise: Designing, consuming, and integrating GraphQL APIs
  • Production mindset: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies, monitoring, and operational excellence
  • Responsive design mastery: Deep understanding of adaptive layouts and cross-device compatibility
  • Accessibility champion: Working knowledge of WCAG guidelines and inclusive design practices
  • Git proficiency: Advanced source control management and code review best practices
  • Mentorship experience: Track record of guiding engineers through architecture decisions and technical growth

Desired Qualifications:

  • Design system experience: Prior work building or maintaining component libraries at scale
  • AI/LLM integration experience: Working with generative AI APIs, prompt engineering, or AI-assisted development tools
  • Compiler/parser knowledge: Experience with ASTs, code generation, or DSL implementation
  • Multi-platform development: Experience building abstractions that work across web and native mobile
  • Backend technology exposure: Familiarity with Node.js, AWS services, or containerization
  • Build tooling expertise: Deep knowledge of Webpack, Vite, or similar build systems
  • Performance profiling: Experience with optimization techniques and debugging tools
  • Strong communication skills: Ability to translate complex technical concepts for variety of audiences
  • Product mindset: Experience working closely with designers and PMs to shape product direction

What Success Looks Like:

In your first 6-12 months, you will:

  • Architect core platform capabilities that enable the generation of production-ready UIs
  • Establish governance frameworks ensuring generated code meets quality, performance, and accessibility standards
  • Enable measurable impact: Contribute to accelerating UI development across the organization
