What is an accessibility designer?

Accessibility Designers are professionals who ensure that digital products, environments, or services are usable by people of all abilities, including those with disabilities. They focus on designing interfaces, content, and experiences that accommodate a wide range of needs, such as visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive differences. Their work often involves collaborating with developers, UX/UI designers, and stakeholders to implement accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). By prioritizing accessibility, they help create inclusive products that provide equal access and usability for everyone.

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

While both roles focus on accessibility, an Accessibility Designer primarily creates accessible digital experiences through design and UX principles. An Accessibility Specialist concentrates on testing, compliance, and ensuring existing products meet accessibility standards. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the accessibility process.

How does an accessibility designer typically collaborate with developers and product teams during a project?

Accessibility Designers work closely with developers and product teams throughout the design and development lifecycle. They provide guidelines, review design prototypes for accessibility compliance, and offer feedback to ensure inclusive user experiences. Regular meetings and collaborative workshops are common, allowing Accessibility Designers to address potential barriers early and suggest practical solutions. This role often involves advocating for accessibility best practices and educating team members on emerging standards and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accessibility designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Designer, you need expertise in inclusive design principles, a solid understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience with web or app development. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools, screen readers, and certifications like CPACC or WAS are often required. Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help you advocate for users with disabilities and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure digital products are usable for everyone and comply with legal accessibility requirements.

Job description

The Senior UX/UI Designer is responsible for leading end-to-end, user-centered design for healthcare SaaS applications, translating complex clinical and administrative workflows into intuitive, accessible experiences. This role drives experience strategy, partners closely with Product and Engineering to shape roadmaps, and influences cross-product consistency through design systems. The Senior UX/UI Designer facilitates research and validation, communicates design rationale to executive and technical audiences, and mentors other designers to elevate design quality and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

User-Centered Design & Research

  • Plan and lead discovery (interviews, workflow observations, surveys) and usability testing; define research goals, scripts, and success criteria
  • Apply systems thinking and empathy-driven design to optimize complex healthcare workflows across roles, channels, and devices
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative insights into experience principles, prioritized opportunities, and measurable design recommendations

Prototyping & Interaction Design

  • Create concepts, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes (e.g., AI tools, Figma) to explore solutions, de-risk decisions, and accelerate delivery
  • Define user journeys, information architecture, and interaction patterns that support clinical and administrative tasks and reduce cognitive load
  • Lead critiques and iterate designs using stakeholder feedback, accessibility reviews, and usability findings; document decisions and tradeoffs

Design Systems & Consistency

  • Own and evolve the design system and component library, establishing governance, contribution standards, and adoption plans
  • Ensure consistency and scalability across products through reusable patterns, style guides, content guidelines, and interaction standards
  • Partner with engineering to align design libraries with coded components and to improve implementation quality through specs and QA

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Influence product strategy and prioritization by connecting user needs, business outcomes, and technical constraints to clear experience recommendations
  • Facilitate workshops (journey mapping, design studios, story mapping) to align teams, clarify requirements, and drive decisions
  • Present design rationale and outcomes to diverse audiences; build alignment through storytelling, artifacts, and clear documentation

Accessibility & Compliance Awareness

  • Champion accessibility by designing and validating against WCAG standards (color, keyboard, screen reader, responsive behaviors)
  • Set usability and accessibility quality bars; partner with QA/engineering to ensure implementation meets standards for diverse user populations
  • Incorporate healthcare compliance and privacy requirements (e.g., HIPAA) into interaction patterns, data display, and workflow design

Required Qualifications:

Education & Experience Guidelines

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field
  • 7+ years of relevant UX/UI design experience, including ownership of complex B2B and/or SaaS products
  • Expert proficiency in design/prototyping tools (e.g., Figma) and production of developer-ready specifications
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI powered tools as a multiplier of individual and team productivity and efficiency
  • Deep knowledge of UX principles, information architecture, accessibility, responsive design, and design system practices
  • Demonstrated experience working in agile product teams and influencing roadmap decisions through research and data
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills, including presenting to senior leaders
  • Ability to translate complex requirements into clear, scalable experiences; comfort navigating ambiguity and making principled tradeoffs
  • ~15% travel required

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

  • Familiarity with healthcare compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA)
  • Strong experience building, governing, and operationalizing design systems and component libraries
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and modern front-end practices to partner effectively with engineering
  • Experience mentoring designers and elevating team design craft through critique, coaching, and best practices
