Job description


Job Summary
Responsible for leading the end-to-end planning, design execution, and delivery of multiple, concurrent store and non-retail development projects in alignment with the Walgreens Design Standards. This role combines architectural judgment, project leadership, and cross-functional coordination to drive consistent, code-compliant, and cost-conscious design outcomes across a large portfolio.
The Architectural Design Manager applies working knowledge of architecture, engineering, and interior planning to adapt standards to real-world conditions, navigate competing priorities, anticipate downstream impacts (coordination, cost, schedule, approvals), and guide internal and external partners through all phases of design development and execution. This role requires comfort operating in a fast-paced, matrixed environment, balancing shifting priorities while maintaining clarity, quality, and accountability across projects.
Responsibilities:
  • Continuously improves design and delivery processes and partners with internal teams and external consultants to apply value engineering strategies that optimize total cost of ownership.
  • Leads cross-functional collaboration across design, construction, engineering, real estate, and operations to deliver projects efficiently while meeting Company objectives and timelines.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in consultant contract negotiation and in leading teams of licensed design professionals supporting development and deployment of the Walgreens Design Standards.
  • Creates, maintains, and applies the Walgreens Design Standards, including Design and Brand Guidelines, Architectures and Engineering Standards, Building Criteria, Specifications, and Technical Manuals.
  • Applies value engineering principles to lifecycle and occupancy costs, balancing cost, quality, compliance, and long-term performance through the disciplined application of standards.
  • Tracks progress across multiple initiatives, leveraging analytics, lessons learned, and best practices from prior projects to continuously refine standards and execution approaches.
  • Acts as a technical and design subject matter expert, supporting current program needs while contributing insight and innovation to future enhancements within the discipline.
  • Partners effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure design solutions are code-compliant, operationally sound, and scalable across diverse site and jurisdictional conditions.

External Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 5 years of experience in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture and/or Design OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 8 years of experience in Project Management, Construction Management, Architecture and/or Design.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing and working with construction and engineering practices including budgeting, estimating and scheduling.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with construction plans and specifications.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with architectural/site plan design, including items such as cost and quality control, material/equipment installation, bidding practices, material and labor costs.
  • Experience with CAD Software.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Word (for example: inserting headers, page breaks, page numbers and tables and/or adjusting table columns).
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Excel (for example: using SUM function, setting borders, setting column width, inserting charts, using text wrap, sorting, setting headers and footers and/or print scaling).
  • At least 1 year of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in retail, healthcare, manufacturing, distribution centers, or similarly complex commercial environments.
  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD; foundational understanding of Revit sufficient to navigate models, understanding workflows, and coordinate with consultants.
  • Experience evaluating building, life safety, and accessibility requirements, including ADA and applicable state and local codes.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage external Architects of Record for multiple concurrent ground-up and/or renovation projects.
  • Ability to manage design deliverables to support critical development milestones, entitlements, and construction start dates while monitoring consultant costs against approved budgets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead meetings, present design solutions, and influence both internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Interior planning experience or demonstrated ability to adapt interior layouts and standards to varying site conditions.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Bluebeam Revu (for example: markup tools, measurement takeoffs, layer management, and collaborating via Studio Sessions).
