Duties and Responsibilities
To manage and maintain advisement services for 1st and 2nd year students, as well as recommend and implement best practices for student success. In addition, the Director will be required to:
  • Develop and implement new initiatives consistent with best practices related to academic advisement, student success and retention.
  • Supervise the monitoring of academic progress for each Advisement Specialist.
  • Work closely with new student orientation (NSO), testing services, and Enrollment Services to adequately plan for Freshmen Orientation courses and caseload assignments.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff and make adjustments and/or recommendations where appropriate.
  • Manage the fiscal responsibilities of the office and develop yearly goals and budget projections.
  • Analyze mid-term student performance data and suggest interventions where appropriate to maintain students' success.
  • Develop and supervise the selection and training procedures for professional advisors and faculty advisors in conjunction with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL).
  • Coordinate and determine appropriate number of sections of Freshmen Seminar.
  • Disseminate the academic progress of students in coordination with the Office of Planning, Analysis and Accountability (OPAA).
  • Coordinate an annual professional development for the Academic Advising team to ensure outstanding service delivery to students.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of academic policies and procedures for academic advising.
  • Partner with the Disability Support Services to deliver quality services to all students.
  • Serve on program or university-wide committees, projects and other forum.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Master's Degree in Education or related field required.
  • Doctorate degree preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum of five (S) years of experience in academic advising, student retention, student affairs/ services in a college/university environment required.
  • The Director should have experience in program planning, program reviews, self-studies and the ability to work under time and multi-tasking pressures, in addition to familiarity with academic policy, curricular and models of decision-making in higher education.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student development theories and their impact on student learning. Must have the ability to collaborate and communicate across functional area and experience levels. Must have experience with University teaching. Must have knowledge of University integrated ERP software package (Oracle) and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills with a customer-first focus. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including attention to detail. The right candidate for this position must be able to handle multiple complex tasks in an active and changing environment, proactively set priorities, goals and objectives, and independently make decisions that have a wide reaching impact on the organization.

Purpose: The mission of the Academic Advising Center at Bowie State University is to serve all undergraduate students from entry to the university to the completion of 59 credits.
The Academic Advising Center provides academic and student development services for current students, as well as work with academic departments to ensure a smooth transition from working with professional academic advisors to faculty advisors located in the academic departments. Specific services include: working closely with the Admissions department to provide academic services, including academic advising, course scheduling, new student orientation; testing services; enrollment management to ensure courses for new students are available upon arrival; career development services; university assessment services; disability support services and coordinating the largest course at the University, Freshman Seminar. Overall, the Director will lead and coordinate university-wide academic advisement services by collaborating with all colleges, departments and support units.
