Title: Project Editor

Reports to: Managing Editor

Department: Editorial | Baker Academic + Brazos Press

Location: Baker Publishing Group Office, Ada, MI (onsite only)

Hours: Full-time 40 hours

FLSA: Exempt

Position Objective:

To guide assigned titles through the editorial process from accepted manuscript to production-ready files and to work cooperatively with other project editors, departments, and authors to ensure a smooth editorial process.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the schedules of assigned projects, adjusting time spent on various stages to ensure on-time delivery of each project.
  • Work constructively and diplomatically with authors.
  • Copyedit and/or proofread assigned titles, as time allows, knowledgeably applying Chicago Manual of Style, 18th ed., and house style guides.
  • Hire appropriate freelance editors and proofreaders and closely review their work.
  • Work with the Managing Editor to set appropriate project budgets and adhere to them.
  • Communicate and coordinate cross-departmentally to ensure quality and on-time publications.
  • Attend and actively participate in regular editorial meetings.
  • Cooperate with editorial peers in refining editorial procedures and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in biblical studies, theology, history of Christianity, or closely related subjects
  • 3+ years of book-editing experience
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Solid knowledge of the 18th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word and editing and proofreading techniques
  • Knowledge of the Bible
  • Working knowledge of biblical languages
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks, follow schedules, and meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated
