The Opportunity

Our Diagnostics business currently has an opportunity for a Logistics Specialist in our North Chicago, IL location. This individual will take responsibility and perform the day-to-day operational functions of international exporting for the Abbott Diagnostics division. The Specialist will require significant interaction with logistics, distribution, operations, planning, and Customs & Trade Compliance. Responsible for the execution on an operational level for appointed freight forwarders for international air and ocean; small international package; same day expedited moves such as next flight out and hot shot truck; LTL, and truckload shipments on an outbound basis.

What You'll Work On

  • Create the export documentation in accordance with US Customs and Corporate Customs & Trade Compliance ( CCTC ) regulations for ADD ( Abbott Diagnostic Division) shipments moving out from Lake County Distribution Center and variety of third-party locations (3PL) around the country, including a K&N warehouse in North Carolina, Streck in Nebraska, and ADD facilities in Dallas, Texas, and Santa Clara, California, ensuring compliance with all relevant customs regulations and trade laws and regulations, including 19CFR, 15CFR, USDA, and other US regulatory agency requirements.
  • Work with various freight forwarders to obtain booking details and House Airway Bills/Seaway Bills, ensure that these documents are correct, and create folders containing the documentation trail for each shipment.
  • Responsible for following required regulations and proper AES filings on applicable shipments for different mode of transportation: Air, Truck, Ocean (both as full container loads - FCL, and less-than container loads - LCL).
  • Responsible for partial or full manual input of each data element for manual shipments.
  • Manage shipment activity assignments by countries; complexity; routes; freight forwarder capacity and customer expectations.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper Dangerous Goods paperwork accompanies all applicable shipments.
  • Accountable to ensure compliant exportation of products from all US sites. Responsible to act when lack of compliance occurs with U.S. policy - must escalate and report to export customs site management.
  • Generate the proper and required international paperwork necessary for outbound shipment moves and exception management on delayed shipments as well as responsible for pre-alerting on all applicable shipments. On international shipments the person is responsible for the order dropping until the order delivers to ADD's customers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in customs compliance, distribution, shipping, logistics, planning, operations, and quality.
  • Actively share customs and logistics expertise and data with cross-functional teams; guiding them through decisions that potentially could be impacted by customs regulations.
  • Recommend projects which will positively impact divisional and corporate results.
  • Responsible for Export Record Keeping complying with Abbott and US governmental organizations policies.
  • Ensure all documentation and training necessary to execute the project plan are complete and meet divisional and corporate quality standards.
  • Responsible for following up on international customer complaints on shipments that may be over-shipped, mis-shipped, or short-shipped.
  • Must be on call to handle emergency shipments after hours and on weekends.
  • Assist in Due Diligence activities to provide logistics and customs expertise in the decision-making process.
  • There are a variety of information systems for managing the freight, distribution, and customer service portion of the business that do not have common platforms, language, or reporting capabilities. The Logistics Customs Specialist will support many ADD departments so they must have strong communication skills, results driven, be self-motivated, with a desire to learn and improve the department and their own skill set.
  • Needs to maintain constant communication/interaction with internal and external stakeholders to ensure quick responses and satisfactory outcomes.
  • Support sustaining a lean culture of continuous process improvement.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience, preferably in logistics or supply chain management.
  • Must have dangerous goods certification or be willing to become hazmat certified for the Lake County facility.

Preferred

  • 1-3 years' experience in international Logistics, Supply Chain, Customer Service, or Customs
  • Sound problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Freight Forwarding experience a plus
  • Effective communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills are critical.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities simultaneously and manage time appropriately.
  • Be self-directed to achieve the departmental objectives. Minimal supervision should be required.
  • Power BI experience is a plus.
