As of Jun 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for 747 flight engineer in the United States is $118,512.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $95,000.00 and $115,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $500,000?

In the aerospace industry, a 747 flight engineer typically does not earn $500,000 annually. Salaries for high-level aerospace engineers or senior aviation professionals can reach or exceed this amount, especially with experience, specialized skills, and additional compensation such as bonuses or profit sharing. However, such earnings are uncommon for flight engineers specifically, whose salaries are generally lower.

What are some typical challenges faced by a 747 Flight Engineer during flights?

747 Flight Engineers often encounter complex troubleshooting situations, such as responding to unexpected system alerts, managing multiple alarms, or addressing technical irregularities during flight. Staying calm under pressure and rapidly diagnosing issues are essential, as you will need to communicate effectively with the pilot and co-pilot to implement solutions. Additionally, adjusting to varying flight schedules and adapting to both routine and emergency scenarios are part of the job. The role is dynamic and requires a proactive approach to ensure all aircraft systems operate smoothly throughout each flight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 747 Flight Engineer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a 747 Flight Engineer, you need an in-depth understanding of aircraft systems, strong troubleshooting abilities, and typically an FAA Flight Engineer certificate. Familiarity with cockpit instrumentation, control panels, and aircraft monitoring systems is crucial, as is staying updated on relevant aviation regulations. Strong teamwork, communication, and situational awareness are key soft skills for effectively coordinating with pilots and crew. These competencies are vital to ensure aircraft safety, efficient in-flight operations, and prompt resolution of technical issues during flight.

How much does a 747 flight engineer make?

A 747 flight engineer typically earns between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, airline, and location. They are responsible for monitoring aircraft systems and ensuring safety during flights, often working long hours and requiring specialized certifications.

Does the 747-400 need a flight engineer?

The Boeing 747-400 typically does not require a flight engineer, as it is equipped with advanced automated systems that allow the flight crew, usually consisting of two pilots, to monitor and manage the aircraft's systems. Historically, earlier 747 models had a flight engineer, but the -400 variant's design eliminates the need for one, streamlining crew operations. Flight engineers are generally not part of the crew for this aircraft type, but pilots must be trained and certified to operate it safely.

Does the 747 still have a flight engineer?

The Boeing 747 no longer typically includes a dedicated flight engineer in modern operations, as advancements in automation and cockpit technology have replaced the need for a flight engineer role. Historically, flight engineers were responsible for monitoring aircraft systems, but today, pilots handle these tasks with the help of advanced avionics systems.

What is a 747 Flight Engineer job?

A 747 Flight Engineer is responsible for monitoring and managing the aircraft's systems during flight, including engines, fuel, hydraulics, and electrical components. They assist the pilots by troubleshooting issues, ensuring the plane operates efficiently and safely. This role was essential on older aircraft like the Boeing 747-100 and 747-200, which required a dedicated crew member to oversee these complex systems. However, modern 747 models, such as the 747-400 and 747-8, have automated systems that eliminate the need for a flight engineer.
