Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Transports students safely to and from home, on field trips and other activities requiring the use of school transportation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- Direct the loading and unloading of students to prevent unsafe conditions;
- Follow and adhere to Hanover County School Board Policy and Regulation Manual and all state and federal laws governing motor vehicles;
- Assist in the supervision of safe evacuation measures in the event of an emergency evacuation;
- Assist in enforcing discipline and safety regulations;
- Secure car seats and other safety restraints;
- Ensure that student's seat belts are fastened at all times;
- Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle;
- Maintains appropriate levels of fuel;
- Perform a daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the vehicle;
- Maintain records and prepares reports on student behavior;
- Use established routes and designated car stops;
- Operate car on approved time schedule;
- Report car accidents and student injuries to authorities;
- Conduct emergency evacuation drills in keeping with division regulation;
- Instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers;
- Attends all in-service safety meetings;
- Attends first aid, CPR and defensive driving classes as required;
- Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather;
- Drive with safety of students as first priority;
- Report personal absence in time for supervisor to secure substitute driver;
- Report student misconduct to the proper school authority;
- Administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations;
- Care for any vehicle assigned for the purpose of performing the duties in the area of assignment;
- Pass pre-employment, safety and annual physical testing;
- Pass all random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Drug Testing Policy;
- Takes responsibility for maintaining the car by taking the car to the transportation garage for scheduled maintenance and when necessary, unscheduled maintenance;
- Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Exhibits a positive image as a representative of the school division.
Demonstrated: knowledge of rules and regulations promulgated by local, state and federal authorities; knowledge of state laws and local ordinances; alertness and good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles and irregular special requests by parents of riders. Requires the ability to operate: all vehicle types used in transporting students; a radio communication device; all emergency equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: High school diploma or equivalent; Three years driving experience or successful completion of a recognized driver education program with ability to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency behind the wheel. Valid Va. Driver's License. Must have and maintain a good driving record. Must be able to meet state requirements for appropriate licensing and physical examination.
Preferred: Familiar with the operation of the two-way radio and all radio procedures. Successful completion of the National Red Cross First Aid Course. A comparable amount of training and experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
Must be able to: lift 40 pounds and assist with students weighing 60-100 pounds; bend over and secure a car seat; control students in a safe and calm manner while safely operating the vehicle; sit for long periods of time (4 hours); pass an annual physical examination.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal. Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception vision and the ability to adjust focus.
