Job description

You have the knowledge. You have the experience. Itโ€™s time to put it to use. The City of Portage is seeking a licensed Mechanical Inspector or a Mechanical Contractor who can become registered as a Mechanical Inspector to join its Building Department staff.


What Youโ€™ll Do:

  • Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial mechanical systems and installations to ensure compliance with the State of Michigan Construction Codes and manufacturer installation specifications.
  • Complete a variety of plan reviews for mechanical systems and installations.
  • Communicate effectively when advising contractors, design professionals, and homeowners of pertinent mechanical codes to assist them in the proper construction methods. Resolve issues and concerns pertaining to building projects and related activities while demonstrating prompt follow-through.
  • Work in tandem with the building, plumbing, electrical inspectors, and fire marshal.
  • Provide oversight of contractors working in the jurisdiction to ensure possession of valid occupational licenses.
  • Assist the Code Enforcement Division in working with citizens to review and provide information on alleged mechanical deficiencies and violations.
  • Maintain State of Michigan licenses with ongoing continuing education.
  • Work on-site when not on inspections during your scheduled hours.

What Weโ€™re Looking For:

  • A licensed mechanical inspector or contractor with three of the four certifications (1, 2, 4, or 9) to become licensed by the State as a Mechanical Inspector.
  • A contractor must have four years of experience or combined training and experience in the field.
  • An excellent communicator with strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent ability to multitask.
  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to learn proprietary software.
