Chemical Operator - 3rd Shift

Onsite - Gurnee, IL

The Role:

To ensure the safe, efficient operation of the batching area. This position interacts strongly with filling area employees and group leaders, and QA department employees.

What You Will Do:

  • Prepare all batches in an efficient manner, stressing safety and quality
  • Connect equipment and tanks and properly transfer liquids
  • Conduct and document periodic verifications of scale accuracy
  • Clean and rinse tanks and other equipment per established procedures
  • Document activities accurately per GMP as required using Product History Records (PHRs)
  • Use all equipment safely and in itโ€™s designed manner
  • Recommend any changes to procedures and or equipment to improve quality, safety, efficiency or reduce waste
  • Observe all safety rules and use all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specified for each batch
  • Assist QA department with all quality assurance requirements for batching and chemical use
  • Assist with daily and weekly batching area clean-up procedures
  • Conduct periodic chemical inventories
  • Organize and consolidate incoming chemical shipments
  • Keep chemical storage area clean

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Forklift/pallet jack experience
  • Ability to meet Respiratory Protection requirements, including fit testing (must be clean-shaven where a respirator seal is required)
  • Chemical compounding or manufacturing experience preferred
  • GMP, OSHA safety, or chemical handling training preferred but not required

Qualification & Skills:

  • Demonstrated safe forklift and pallet jack operation
  • General mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English as required to understand safety instructions, company policies, and to perform essential job duties.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work orders and batching instructions
  • General math skills
  • Previous chemical compounding experience highly desirable
  • Respiratory Protection Requirement:
    • This position may require the use of a tight-fitting respirator in accordance with OSHA regulations. In which case, employees must be able to maintain a clean-shaven face where facial hair would interfere with the respirator seal. Reasonable accommodations will be considered in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.


Working Environment:

The Chemical Operator works in a manufacturing/industrial environment involving the handling, processing, and transfer of chemicals and raw materials. The role may include work in:

  • Indoor production areas, tank farms, and warehouse/storage areas
  • Process units with pumps, piping systems, reactors, and control panels
  • Areas with moving mechanical parts and automated equipment
  • Elevated platforms, ladders, and grated flooring
  • Confined spaces (as trained and authorized)
  • Exposure to chemicals, vapors, fumes, and odors
  • Exposure to varying temperatures (heat from processes or outdoor weather conditions)
  • Wet or slippery surfaces
  • Forklift and powered industrial truck traffic
  • Potential emergency situations requiring immediate response
  • The position requires strict adherence to company safety policies, SDS requirements, and OSHA regulations, including but not limited to:
  • Hazard Communication (29 CFR 1910.1200)
  • Personal Protective Equipment (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I)
  • Powered Industrial Vehicle (29 CFR 1910.178)


Physical Demands:

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Frequent standing and walking (up to 10 hours per shift)
  • Frequent climbing of stairs and ladders
  • Occasional kneeling, crouching, bending, and stooping
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to push/pull hoses, valves, and material handling equipment
  • Manual handling of drums, bags, and containers (with mechanical assistance when required)
  • Ability to operate hand tools and process control equipment
  • Ability to manipulate valves, gauges, and instrumentation controls
  • Frequent use of hands for computer data entry and documentation
  • Ability to read gauges, labels, SDS sheets, and digital control screens
  • Ability to distinguish colors for chemical identification and indicator lights
  • Ability to hear alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions
  • Ability to detect unusual odors or leaks
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements
  • Operators must be able to wear required PPE for extended periods, which may include:
  • Chemical-resistant gloves
  • Tyvek suits
  • Safety glasses/goggles and face shields
  • Steel-toe, chemical resistant safety shoes
  • Respiratory protection (including tight-fitting respirators, subject to medical clearance and fit testing)

Compensation Range:

This position may be eligible for a $1,700 sign-on bonus. Bonus amounts and eligibility criteria vary by role, are contingent upon successful completion of designated employment milestones, and are paid in installments based on continued employment.
