How much do 3g weld jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for 3g weld in the United States is $23.96, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $26.44 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges 3G welders face when working on vertical welding projects, and how can they overcome them?

3G welders often encounter challenges such as gravity-related issues, which can cause molten metal to sag or drip while welding in the vertical position. To overcome these, welders typically use specific techniques like adjusting their travel speed, using the correct electrode angles, and selecting suitable welding parameters. Mastery of these skills is often developed through practice and ongoing training, and many teams encourage experienced welders to mentor new hires. Working closely with supervisors and safety officers is also important to maintain quality and meet safety standards on every project.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

3G welders, who perform groove welds in the flat or horizontal positions, can earn around $50 an hour with experience, certifications, and in-demand skills. Specialized welding roles such as pipe welders or underwater welders often pay higher, but pay rates vary based on location, industry, and certification level.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

3G welders, who are certified to perform high-quality welds in various positions, can potentially earn $300,000 annually with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-demand industries or locations. However, such earnings are uncommon and typically require overtime, bonuses, or working in specialized fields like pipeline or aerospace welding. Most welders earn significantly less, with salaries varying based on experience, certification, and geographic area.

What is the difference between 3G Weld vs 2G Weld?

Aspect3G Weld2G Weld
PositionVertical (upward or downward)Horizontal
CertificationsTypically requires AWS or ASME certificationsSimilar certification requirements
Work EnvironmentVertical welding positions, often in construction or manufacturingHorizontal positions, common in pipe welding and fabrication
Industry UsageConstruction, shipbuilding, industrial fabricationPipeline, structural steel, industrial fabrication

Both 3G and 2G welds require similar certifications and are used in industrial settings. The main difference lies in the welding position: 3G involves vertical welding, while 2G involves horizontal welding. Understanding these differences helps welders choose the right certification and prepare for specific job requirements.

What are 3G welders?

3G welders are professionals who are skilled in performing welding in the vertical position, specifically the 3G (third groove) position. This involves welding a joint that is oriented vertically, which is a common requirement in construction and fabrication industries. 3G welding certifies that a welder can weld in a vertical groove position, which is more challenging than flat or horizontal positions due to gravity affecting the molten metal. Achieving this certification demonstrates a welder's proficiency and ability to handle complex welding tasks.

What is 1G 2G 3G 4G 5G welding position?

In welding, the positions 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G refer to different weld positions used to assess a welder's skill. The numbers indicate the location and orientation of the weld: 1G is flat, 2G is horizontal, 3G is vertical, 4G is overhead, and 5G is fixed or pipe welding. Welders often need certification in these positions to qualify for various jobs, especially in pipe and structural welding.

What is a 3G position in welding?

A 3G position in welding refers to a vertical position where the welder performs fillet or groove welds on a vertical surface. It is a common position in pipe and structural welding, requiring skills to control weld quality and penetration while working against gravity. Certification in 3G positions is often required for certain welding jobs and involves passing specific tests to demonstrate proficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3G Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3G Welder, you need strong proficiency in welding techniques, particularly in vertical and overhead positions, along with a high school diploma or equivalent and welding certification (such as AWS). Familiarity with welding machines, safety equipment, blueprints, and inspection tools is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a strong safety mindset are essential soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure high-quality welds, workplace safety, and adherence to project specifications across diverse welding environments.
