What is a 3dr?

A 3Dr, or 3D artist, is a professional who creates three-dimensional models, environments, and animations for industries like gaming, film, architecture, and product design. They use specialized software such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max to bring digital objects and scenes to life. Their work often involves texturing, lighting, and rendering to ensure realistic or stylized visuals. 3D artists may collaborate with designers, developers, and engineers to achieve project goals.

What are typical daily responsibilities for a 3dr in a production team?

A 3Dr typically spends their day creating, refining, and animating 3D models for use in video games, films, advertising, or product design, often working closely with art directors, animators, and other creative team members. Tasks may include interpreting concept art, sculpting digital models, adding textures, setting up lighting, and rendering scenes to achieve the desired visual effect. Regular feedback sessions and revisions are common, as these professionals work collaboratively to meet both aesthetic and technical requirements. Additionally, keeping up with industry standards and software updates is a regular part of the job to ensure output meets current production expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 3dr position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3Dr, you need a strong background in 3D modeling, texturing, rendering, and animation, typically supported by a degree in graphic design, computer graphics, or related fields. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, or Cinema 4D is essential, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, strong communication, and teamwork skills are critical soft skills for collaborating on projects and translating concepts into visual assets. These competencies are important to ensure high-quality and visually compelling 3D content that meets client or project specifications.

Job description

Geomatics Technician II (Reality Capture Data Processing & Scan-to-BIM)

About Ayoroa | Simmons

Ayoroa | Simmons, LLC is a specialized professional services firm focused on 3D laser scanning, scan-to-BIM, and BIM coordination for complex facilities and infrastructure. We partner with Government and private-sector clients to create accurate digital representations of the built environment that support better planning, operations, and decision-making.

We are seeking a Geomatics Technician II to take independent ownership of point cloud processing and scan-to-BIM modeling within our growing Reality Capture Department.

Position Overview

This role builds directly on the Geomatics Technician I foundation — independent registration, QC, and processing proficiency — and extends it into full ownership of scan-to-BIM modeling and CAD integration. The Geomatics Technician II works with minimal oversight on standard production work, and brings technical judgment and documentation discipline to more complex, multi-scan projects.

Key Responsibilities

Point Cloud Processing & Scan-to-BIM (primary focus)

  • Independently process and QA/QC point cloud data from terrestrial, mobile, and aerial capture sources
  • Perform scan-to-BIM modeling in Revit, Navisworks, or equivalent software
  • Integrate reality capture data with CAD deliverables in Revit, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or similar
  • Register and align multi-scan datasets to project control independently, resolving registration issues without senior escalation

Data & Workflow Automation

  • Identify and implement automation opportunities across processing and scan-to-BIM workflows
  • Set and maintain file organization and delivery standards for projects you own
  • Strengthen documentation practices so your processing and modeling decisions are traceable and repeatable by others on the team

Field Support

  • Support terrestrial 3D laser scanning, control surveys, and existing-conditions surveys as needed
  • Coordinate field activities with internal teams and project stakeholders to support accuracy and schedule alignment
  • Complete a 30-Hour OSHA Construction Industry training course within 90 days of joining the geospatial team

Team Contribution

  • Support junior technical staff with processing questions as they build toward independent proficiency
  • Additional strategic assignments as assigned by executive leadership

Success Profile

Success in this role looks like demonstrated independent ownership of point cloud processing and scan-to-BIM modeling on standard and moderately complex projects, evidenced by clean QA/QC outcomes, proactive communication on data issues, and documentation clear enough for another team member to pick up the work.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in terrestrial LiDAR capture and processing projects
  • B.S. in engineering, geomatics, or a related technical field is the priority qualification; demonstrated equivalent experience is an accepted substitute
  • Independent experience with point cloud registration and processing (e.g., Leica Register360, Cyclone, NavVis Ivion)
  • Proficiency with scan-to-BIM modeling software (Revit, Navisworks, or equivalent)
  • Strong documentation habits and QA/QC discipline
  • Valid driver's license
  • Comfortable with occasional fieldwork and travel (up to 50%)

Preferred:

  • ASPRS certification pursuit (e.g., Certified Mapping Technician)
  • Experience with cross-software workflows (e.g., Revit, TopoDOT, Cyclone 3DR)
  • Exposure to UAV-based imaging or LiDAR data workflows
  • EIT certification or equivalent technical credential

Why Join Us

At Ayoroa | Simmons, we invest in people and technology to deliver exceptional results in geomatics, remote sensing, and spatial data production. You will not be siloed into a single task — you will have direct influence over how our team grows, what tools we adopt, and which clients and markets we pursue. We offer:

  • 401(k) with 4% company match
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Employee referral program
