What is a 3DCS?

A 3Dcs job typically involves working with 3DCS software, a dimensional analysis tool used in engineering and manufacturing. Professionals in this role use the software to analyze and optimize the geometric variation of products, ensuring quality and precision in design and production. Industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing rely on 3DCS for tolerance analysis and improving assembly efficiency. This job may require skills in CAD modeling, statistical analysis, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

What does a 3DCS engineer do?

A typical day for a 3DCS Engineer involves collaborating with design, quality, and manufacturing teams to analyze and simulate the effects of dimensional variations on assemblies using specialized 3DCS software. You'll run tolerance analyses, interpret simulation results, and provide recommendations to optimize designs for manufacturability and quality. Regular meetings, report generation, and troubleshooting dimensional issues as they arise are also key parts of the role. This position requires a balance of independent modeling work and active communication with diverse engineering teams to ensure design intent aligns with production capabilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 3DCS position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3DCS (Three-Dimensional Dimensional Control Systems) Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, CAD modeling, and statistical analysis, often supported by a degree in engineering or related technical field. Proficiency with 3DCS Variation Analyst software, CAD platforms like CATIA or Siemens NX, and an understanding of tolerance analysis are highly valued in this role. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills, enabling successful collaboration with cross-functional product and manufacturing teams. These skills ensure precise quality control, efficient problem-solving, and the ability to identify and mitigate manufacturing variations early in the product development process.

Job description

As a Dimensional Engineer on the Meta Reality Labs hardware team, you will support the development and production of state-of-the-art mechanical designs, structures, mechanisms and sensor integration solutions that will create transformative experiences for AI glasses users. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling and fast, iterative prototyping. You will work on cutting-edge technologies with a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists that pioneer mechanical, electrical, optical, materials, firmware, software, and computer vision solutions. We value people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and can envision how that prototype will transition into a high-volume consumer product.
Product Design Engineer - Dimensional Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Lead geometry control solutions as part of a team. This includes 3D dimensional analysis and datum coordination to support functional and manufacturing build strategies
  • Lead tolerance analysis and GD&T development efforts with the design team, developing and sharing best practices
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to generate concepts and detailed designs
  • Apply rigorous variation simulation modeling to solve challenging design problems
  • Contribute to robust measurement plan execution by supporting gauge R&R studies with suppliers, authoring/reviewing MSOPs, and collaborating with metrology teams

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • Experience developing 3D variation simulation analyses using one or more of the following software packages: Siemens VA (VisVSA), 3DCS, CETOL
  • 8+ years of industry/academic experience
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, injection molding, etc.)
  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, and associated metrology
  • Experience working on design teams throughout the product lifecycle (from concept to the start of production)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (NX preferred)
  • Knowledge of Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), Gage R&R, and other statistical methods required to support Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
  • Experience using Minitab, Quantum XL, JMP, or other statistical software
  • Experience creating scripts or algorithms to support measurement data analysis and assembly simulation requirements
  • 8+ years of dimensional engineering experience, specifically with the application of GD&T and the development of 3D variation simulation analyses (VisVSA preferred)
  • 4+ years of working on high-volume products such as consumer tech, automotive, aerospace, consumer appliance, or medical device
