Job Description
The Role
General Motors is seeking a creative Exterior Designer to join the Advanced Design / Architectural Framing Studio. This role focuses on shaping forward-looking vehicle concepts and exterior proposals that express brand vision, innovation, and future architectural direction. The designer will operate with a high degree of independence, applying sound judgment to complex design challenges while contributing to a collaborative studio environment. This position plays a key role in translating creative direction into compelling, production-influencing design proposals. The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in exterior form, proportion, and storytelling, along with the ability to communicate design intent through both 2D and 3D mediums.
What You'll Do
  • Develop advanced exterior design concepts from early ideation through refined proposal stages
  • Create high-quality sketches, renderings, and digital assets that communicate proportion, stance, and surface development
  • Interpret creative direction and translate it into multiple design themes and proposals
  • Work within architectural constraints while influencing future vehicle platforms and design possibilities
  • Identify and resolve design challenges related to package, feasibility, proportion, and brand alignment
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with interior design, sculpting, visualization, engineering, and brand teams
  • Translate 2D sketches into 3D models at both scale and full size and present work in studio reviews

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Design, Industrial Design, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience in automotive exterior design, concept design, or advanced studio environments
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating exterior sketching, ideation, and form development expertise
  • Proven ability to work independently on assigned design work with moderate supervision
  • Strong understanding of design development processes and cross-functional integration
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to translate 2D concepts into 3D models at scale and full size

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience working in an advanced or concept design studio
  • Strong digital design and visualization skills using relevant industry tools
  • Ability to balance bold creative thinking with technical and program constraints
  • Awareness of emerging mobility, design, and customer trends shaping future vehicle concepts
