The Role

General Motors Creative Design is seeking highly creative designers specializing in either Exterior or Interior design to join the Advanced Concepts team. This studio leads earlystage architectural exploration and plays a critical role in shaping the future of GM vehicles. Designers work in a global, cross functional environment that blends transportation design, engineering, advanced technology, and emerging mobility insights. The work centers on nextgeneration concept development, brandappropriate architectural proportioning, and forwardlooking design innovation across both interior and exterior domains. A portfolio submission is required for consideration.

What You'll Do

  • Create original vehicle design concepts through 2D sketching and translate them into 3D digital and clay models.
  • Collaborate closely with clay and CAS 3D digital sculpting teams to refine themes, maintain design intent, and guide 3D development.
  • Use AI and digital visualization tools, including Vizcom, to explore rapid ideation and accelerate design development.
  • Partner with engineering and packaging teams early in the process to define vehicle architecture, criteria, and customerfocused solutions.
  • Evaluate customer needs, pain points, and mobility trends to inform concept direction and proposal creation.
  • Create early physical prototypes such as seat bucks, lighting mockups, and other proofofconcept models to validate design ideas.
  • Present design proposals and insights to leadership clearly and professionally, integrating feedback into iterative updates.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of global automotive, technology, and material trends and apply them to future design direction.
  • Support cross functional collaboration and provide design guidance when needed.

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Design or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of professional postinternship experience in interior design, exterior design, automotive design, or related work.
  • Knowledge & experience of the entire vehicle development process.
  • Strong 3D digital modeling skills using tools such as Alias, SubD, Blender, Maya, VRED, or similar, with the ability to translate 2D concepts into compelling 3D form.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D communication tools including Adobe Creative Suite, Alias, Maya, animation tools, and AI tools such as Vizcom.
  • Strong drawing skills that demonstrate solid understanding of form, proportion, and visual communication.
  • Experience collaborating with clay and CAS 3D digital sculpting teams to refine design themes.
  • Ability to quickly & accurately translate 2D sketches into 3D scale & full-size models incorporating engineering criteria.
  • Experience working with engineering and packaging teams to define early architecture, criteria, and functional requirements.
  • Experience supporting early physical prototyping such as mockups, seating bucks, or lighting concepts.
  • Strong ability to research and interpret global automotive, material, and design trends and apply them to new concepts.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A portfolio (online or private) that shows transportation design projects and demonstrates design excellence.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience in exterior or interior full vehicle design and development.
  • Ability to understand subsystem interactions and how they affect overall vehicle development.
  • Proven creative proficiency and the ability to communicate concepts digitally.
  • Strong visual storytelling and presentation skills with the ability to communicate design rationale to leadership or executive audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
