30 Hours Week Software Developer information

What is a 30 hours week software developer?

A 30 hours week software developer is a professional who works in software development but has a reduced work schedule, typically working 30 hours per week instead of the traditional 40. This arrangement can provide better work-life balance, flexibility, and can be suitable for those managing other responsibilities or seeking reduced hours. These developers perform the same tasks as full-time developers, such as coding, debugging, and collaborating with teams, but within a shorter workweek.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 30 hours week software developer?

To thrive as a 30 Hours Week Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and collaboration platforms like Jira or Slack is typically required. Time management, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for success in a reduced-hour, flexible role. These skills ensure that developers can produce high-quality code, meet project goals efficiently, and collaborate well within teams despite a part-time schedule.

How does working as a 30 hours per week software developer impact team collaboration and project delivery?

As a 30 hours per week Software Developer, you’ll often work in teams that include both full-time and part-time members. Clear communication is essential to ensure smooth collaboration, as your availability may differ from others on the team. Many organizations accommodate flexible schedules by leveraging asynchronous communication tools and setting well-defined expectations for deliverables. While you may need to be proactive about syncing up during overlapping hours, this structure can support a healthy work-life balance without compromising project outcomes.

About the Role
We're seeking a highly skilled Software Developer with deep expertise in microservices architecture, cloud-native development, and modern front-end technologies. This is a hands-on role where you'll design and build scalable, high-performance applications that power our core business systems. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, agile environment to deliver innovative solutions that drive real impact.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Build, maintain, and modernize C#/.NET applications, including ASP.NET Core Web APIs, microservices, and legacy MVC applications.
  • Develop reliable backend services and message-driven workflows for high-throughput, distributed systems.
  • Design, tune, and troubleshoot SQL Server workloads, including stored procedures, indexing, execution plans, and concurrency issues.
  • Build and maintain React applications using TypeScript and modern frontend patterns.
  • Build services that run in containerized environments using established Docker and Kubernetes patterns.
  • Integrate applications with Azure services such as Key Vault, Container Registry, and Blob Storage using existing platform standards.
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps to support reliable application delivery.
  • Use observability tooling (for example Grafana) to monitor production behavior and proactively identify issues.
  • Write automated tests across service, integration, and UI layers using tools such as xUnit, Jest, and Playwright.
  • Lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and translate business goals into clear technical solutions.

Must-Have Skills & Experience
Core Development
  • Strong C# and ASP.NET Core Web API experience.
  • Proficient in JavaScript/TypeScript and React or similar frontend frameworks.
  • Solid object-oriented design fundamentals and knowledge of common software design patterns.
  • Ability to work effectively across both modern and legacy .NET codebases.

Architecture & Integration
  • Experience designing, building, or supporting distributed backend systems, including microservices, asynchronous workflows, message-driven integration, and common application architecture patterns.

Database & Data Access
  • Hands-on experience with stored procedures and execution plan analysis.

Cloud, Infrastructure, and Delivery
  • Experience building applications that run in cloud or containerized environments.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar deployment platforms.
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and troubleshooting application deployment issues.

Testing, Collaboration, and Process
  • Experience writing automated tests and supporting quality-focused development practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Comfortable in Agile/Scrum environments and standard Git workflows.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in financial services, tax software, or similarly regulated and high-availability domains.
  • Experience with Azure services such as Key Vault, Container Registry, Blob Storage, or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience deploying or supporting applications in Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Advanced SQL Server performance tuning experience in high-volume production systems.
  • Experience with observability and production diagnostics in complex systems.

Education & Certifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience will be considered.
