How much do 2nd shift computer programmer jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for 2nd shift computer programmer in California is $64,123.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,800.00 and $79,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 2nd Shift Computer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 2nd Shift Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and occasionally specialized scheduling or batch processing tools is important. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during less-supervised hours are valuable soft skills. These competencies are crucial for maintaining productivity, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring seamless operations during non-standard work hours.

What are some unique challenges faced by a 2nd Shift Computer Programmer, and how can they be addressed?

2nd Shift Computer Programmers often work outside of standard business hours, which can mean less direct supervision but also fewer immediate resources if issues arise. Communication with daytime teams may require extra coordination, so clear documentation and regular status updates are key. Additionally, working evening hours can impact work-life balance, but many employers offer flexible scheduling or shift differentials to help compensate. Building strong remote communication practices and taking advantage of any available support channels can help 2nd shift programmers succeed.

What are 2nd shift computer programmers?

2nd shift computer programmers are software developers or coders who work during the second shift, which typically falls in the late afternoon to late evening hours (such as 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.). They perform the same tasks as other computer programmers, like writing and testing code, debugging software, and collaborating with team members, but their work schedule is outside the traditional 9-to-5. This shift may be necessary to support global operations, provide after-hours technical support, or maintain critical systems during off-peak times.

Overview
At Veeco, Manufacturing Engineers play a critical role in transforming complex designs into high-performance semiconductor manufacturing systems. As a global leader in advanced capital equipment, Veeco enables next-generation technologies-and that innovation begins on the manufacturing floor.
Veeco is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership for production tools and New Product Introduction (NPI) activities during 2nd-shift operations. This role is well-suited for engineers who thrive in fast-paced, high-mix manufacturing environments and are motivated by technical ownership, independent decision-making, and direct production impact.
Supporting the 2nd shift (1:00 PM - 10:00 PM), this position serves as a key engineering authority during off-shift hours-resolving real-time issues, supporting cleanroom manufacturing, and partnering closely with operations to ensure quality, throughput, and on-time delivery. The role directly influences NPI builds, early product stabilization, and production readiness, offering broad exposure to complex semiconductor capital equipment and end-to-end manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary technical engineering resource for 2nd-shift manufacturing operations, supporting production equipment, tools, and processes
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, optical, and control-related issues impacting yield, quality, cost, or schedule
  • Lead structured root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions for manufacturing and equipment issues
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, including product transitions, process development, and early production builds
  • Review, maintain, and improve manufacturing documentation to ensure proper methods, controls, and compliance
  • Execute Engineering Change Masters (ECMs) accurately, timely, and cost-effectively using SAP
  • Perform Non-Conforming Material (NCM) disposition and authorize rework in collaboration with Quality and Manufacturing teams
  • Respond to technical inquiries from internal stakeholders and external suppliers
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to equipment, tooling, processes, and manufacturing environments
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with manufacturing leadership and cross-functional teams
  • Provide technical guidance and support training for manufacturing personnel during 2nd-shift operations
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers to ensure alignment on technical requirements, quality standards, and production readiness

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Software Engineering preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant manufacturing engineering experience supporting complex electro-mechanical equipment, preferably semiconductor manufacturing equipment - Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments required
  • Strong foundation in manufacturing engineering principles, including equipment support, process control, and system integration
  • Working knowledge of system controls, architecture, and hardware/software interfaces
  • Experience supporting semiconductor equipment manufacturing and cleanroom operations
  • Demonstrated ability to solve real-time production problems where standard procedures may not fully apply
  • Proficiency in interpreting complex technical documentation, including electrical and pneumatic schematics, mechanical drawings, BOMs, and operating manuals
  • Experience with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD for modeling and technical support
  • Knowledge of SPC and process control methodologies
  • Familiarity with MRP systems; SAP experience strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical and data-driven problem-solving skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment during off-shift operations
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with shifting priorities

Salary and BenefitsThe expected salary range for this position is $109,405-$138,580, plus a bonus opportunity. We will consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors when determining your pay.
Other benefits include:
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Time
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Life and Accident Insurance
  • Disability Insurance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Identity Theft Remediation
  • Emergency Travel Assistance
