How much do 2d art jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for 2d art in the United States is $69,553.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $36,000.00 and $99,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is 2d art?

2D art refers to artwork that exists in two dimensions—height and width—such as illustrations, concept art, character designs, backgrounds, and textures. In the job context, 2D artists create visuals for video games, animation, advertising, publishing, and more. These professionals use traditional methods or digital tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphic software to produce their work. 2D artists often collaborate with other creatives to bring visual concepts to life and ensure consistency with a project’s overall style.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 2d artist?

To thrive as a 2D Artist, you need a strong foundation in drawing, color theory, composition, and digital illustration, often supported by an art-related degree or portfolio demonstrating your skills. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and sometimes experience with tools like Procreate or Clip Studio Paint is highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help artists collaborate well and bring visual concepts to life. These skills ensure high-quality, visually appealing work that meets client or project goals in a competitive creative industry.

How does a 2d artist typically collaborate with game designers and animators during a project?

As a 2D Artist, collaboration with game designers and animators is a core part of the role. You’ll often work closely with designers to understand the visual style and requirements for each project, providing concept art and finalized assets that fit the creative vision. Regular meetings or feedback sessions with animators ensure that your artwork is optimized for movement and gameplay needs, requiring clear communication and flexibility in adjusting your designs. This teamwork fosters a dynamic environment where ideas are exchanged, and assets are refined to achieve cohesive and engaging visuals.

What is the difference between 2D Art vs 3D Artist?

While both 2D Art and 3D Artist roles involve digital creativity and require strong portfolios, 2D Art focuses on flat images, illustrations, and concept art, whereas 3D Artists create three-dimensional models and environments. Both roles are essential in gaming, animation, and design industries, but they utilize different tools and techniques.
